iTunes Review

Kenny Chesney returns to his favorite island haunts on 2008’s Lucky Old Sun — but this time the journey is a bittersweet one. A pang of longing runs through this album, expressed in both its world-weary lyrics and the muted sound of its tracks. Beneath the drowsy Caribbean imagery found here, there’s a reoccurring sense of heartache and a yearning for escape. “Way Down Here,” “Spirit of a Storm,” and “Boats” express a desire for healing and solace amidst balmy, acoustic-based arrangements. Chesney declares his gratitude to the Lord in “I’m Alive” and settles into a contented state in “Nowhere to Go, Nowhere to Be.” He manages to stir up some playful energy on “Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven” (backed up by reggae’s legendary Wailers) and slides into a bluesy mood for “Ten with a Two.” But what truly defines this album is its melancholy title tune, rendered with a wistful air by Chesney and guest star Willie Nelson. Lucky Old Sun is a work of mature reflection that downplays obvious radio hits in favor of something more personal and, ultimately, more appealing. Chesney sounds sadder but wiser as he delivers one of his best song collections in years.

What happened to the old kenny??

What happened to the old Kenny that we all knew and loved? He has no more "country music" and no upbeat songs.... It's all slow island type songs.. That is not all bad, but Kenny was one of my favorite COUNTRY singers and over the past couple years he has not produced one album with the country feeling that I have felt like purchasing. Come on Kenny get back to your roots.. I miss the country!

Decent

all im gonna say is I want the country kenny back!!! Young, Dont't Happen Twice, The Good Stuff, I Go Back, Summertime, Never Wanted Nothing More

No songs.... Just stories

Alot of people say that kenny has over done the "Island" thing that it's gone on too long... I disagree!!! the songs he writes while in the Islands are inspired by the people he meets.... they tell stories of that person's life or how that person inspired Kenny in some way... like the song "The Life" It's about a guy he met in Mexico that was just making ends meet by living his life and fishing for a living, playing his guitar, hanging out at a bar with his friends... and when kenny chesney paid him too much the guy said thanx...kenny didn't think anything of it cuz he told the guy he made a good living back home... the guy said he did too... What that's sayin is it doesn't matter how much money you have... it goes back to that old sayin, "Money can't buy happiness" Kenny said he hopes he can live that life style when he's "retired" ... even tho i think he halfway already has that life style. :)... The song "I'm Alive" is when he met this old captain and he didn't look very good... so kenny asked how he was doin, the guy said I'm alive..and one of the guys with kenny had a guitar riff that he just kept playing but he didn't have words or anything else ... so they worked with it a little bit and turned it into a great song! ... Also "Nowhere to Go, Nowhere to be" was inspired from when kenny was sitting at a bar... he ordered a cheese burger and at the corner end of the bar sat a man named charlie.. he was reading a book by Hemmingway... and for once in Kenny's life he actually felt still...he had Nowhere to go, Nowhere to be... so he sat with Charlie, took out a pen and paper and wrote the song and talked to Charlie inbetween chapters... Down the road is a Great song that kenny has been wanting to put out for a while.. just it never really fit with the theme of any of his albums... but he finally got the choice on this one cause this album doesn't really have the "in-your-face drums and/guitars" it's just kenny and an acoustic guitar...that's and even though they are as simple as they are... they are just as great as the songs that are all loud and in your face music.. that's why I love kenny chesney... he can be the loud party all night have a good time guy... or the chilled free spirit simple beach guy... Keep it up Kenny!!!

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Contemporary country star Kenny Chesney didn't have the immediate breakout success that many of his peers enjoyed upon signing with major labels, but gradually built up a significant following via hard work, pop-friendly ballads, and a likable, average-guy persona. Chesney was born in Knoxville, TN, in 1968 and raised in the nearby small town of Luttrell, better known as the home of Chet Atkins. He grew up listening to both country and rock & roll, but didn't get serious about music until college,...
