iTunes Review
The last album to feature founding member Bernie Leadon and the first to include guitarist Don Felder, One of These Nights shows the Eagles in transition. “Hollywood Waltz” and “Lyin’ Eyes” continued in the mold of the silky country rock that made them famous, while “Journey of the Sorcerer” and “One of These Nights” pointed the way towards the opulent ‘70s rock of Hotel California. The band made full use of its new three-guitar lineup on “Too Many Hands” and “Visions,” which feature dueling solos and electrified harmonies. Despite the fact that the group was breaking new ground, there is no mistaking the album’s underlying sense of finality. “Take It To the Limit,” “After the Thrill Is Gone,” and Bernie Leadon’s “I Wish You Peace” (“I wish you the strength to let love glow on / I wish you the strength to let love go on”) can all be read as poignant farewell messages to the group’s original incarnation as it prepared to embark on a new path.

Creative and Edgy, One of These Nights Ranks High Among Eagles Albums
by Will W. MartinIn many respects, I consider OOTN to be the Eagles greatest single album. I know...some huge percentage of everyone will argue that belongs to Hotel California and, on any given day I might wake up and agree but in the end I feel it comes down to taste. For me, OOTN has a special place in my heart-my parents had it on cassette (remember those?) and played into the ground in the early 80's. I bought a remastered version of the album in 2000 and listened to it for the first time and realized I already knew all the songs from those constant early playings.
The first thing to consider is that OOTN and Hotel are very different albums soundwise. The departure of Leadon and arrival of Joe Walsh totally changed the bands sound. OOTN is very much an album in transition from the earlier "country rock" (more country) of the early Eagles to the later "california rock" (more rock) of the later Eagles. As is often the case, transitional music is often the best because its broad and takes risks...and OOTN is no exception.
The blending of the Eagles distinct musical styles is, for whatever reason, more apparent on OOTN than any other album...and its done really well. This is reflected in how, every time I listen to this album, the tracks seem so DEEP musically. The instrumentation is so multilayered, from the bass, drums and multiple guitars of the title track, to the dueling guitars on Visions (a song that I pray to god one day I can download for Guitar Hero).
It is difficult to explain why this album comes off the way it does...but I would give a large amount of credit to the now departed Don Felder. The Eagles were always basically a band with a mult-instrumental guy in Leadon and a lead guitarist in Frey----and I have never felt Frey was a particularly creative player. Felder however seemed to have a sense for certain things that seemed to kick the music to another level (see Visions...I still think this has some of the Eagles best guitar work).
I have always argued that albums are a snapshot in time and to me, for whatever reason, OOTN is a snapshot of a very special and creative moment in time for one of the greatest bands ever. Well worth the purchase and listen PARTICULARLY in the remastered version.
The best u can get
by King Bee 93The eagles are one of the greatest bands, in my mind. This album probably is my favorite out of the ones that they have produced. I especially like One of These Nights. These guys are AMAZING
One of Their Most Consistent
by RipRoarinI find this is the Eagles CD that I return to the most, next to the first one. Yes, it has 3 of their biggest hits, the title track, Lyin Eyes, and Take it To the Limit. But its real strength, in my opinion, are in the songs you never hear on the radio - Too Many Hands, Hollywood Waltz and Visions are as good as any songs in the Eagles catalog. For some unknon reason, they have not played these songs live, and don't to this day. Those 3 are great songs. Journey of the Sorcerer is a bit long, but a welcome change as an instrumental. After the Thrill is Gone is an ok cut and I Wish You Peace drags the album to a slow close. Not perfect, but many more high spots that the subsequent albums, and more consistency throughout.
