Magic Bullets

Magic Bullets

Darlings of the San Francisco Anglophile scene, Magic Bullets cut their teeth in 2004 playing Britpop-themed clubs like Popscene. Though 2010’s self-titled album reveals a sextet less infatuated with the genre’s heyday acts like Blur, Oasis and Pulp. From the opening “A Day Not So Far Off,” it’s evident that their influences go back a bit further into the realms of late-‘80s indie bands. Echoes of the Feelies’ flirtations with post-punk tinges permeate throughout, while the melancholy guitar pop of “They Wrote a Song About You” crosses the Smiths’ dramatic vocal approach with melodies reminiscent of Echo & The Bunnymen. Fans of Scottish pop and the “C86 sound” will find a warm familiarity in songs like the jangling “Young Shoulders” and the infectious “Red Room.” “Sigh the Day Away” is an excellent pop tune that recalls the best of Sarah Records. Of course Magic Bullets bring their own sound to the party as well as heard on the daringly funky “On Top of the World” (dig that slap bass) and with the lilting ballad “China Beach.”
