Outstanding Urban/Jazz Record!
I initially bought this CD for the virtuosic flute playing of Katisse. His concept on the instrument, not to mention amazing chops, is truly innovative. As a musician myself, and coming from a straight ahead jazz background, I’ve always had hard time embracing any rap tracks I’ve heard. Not any more! I can’t stop listening to this seemingly perfect marriage of jazz/urban grooves and harmonies with thoughtful, inspirational spoken word.
This CD was in my car for 6 weeks in a row!
After seeing Katisse live at the Baked Potato in L.A. (last Thursday of each month), and hearing how tight the band was and is, I bought the CD from Katisse right there during the break. Although slightly different ensemble live than on the CD, Katisse manages to have incredible musicians surrounding him. I thoroughly enjoyed that evening and returned again the next month, and maybe again the folllowing month. Driving 65 miles is worth it. If the 1st six tracks don't hook you, too bad, because the rest of the CD is a nice mix of jazz and acid jazz.
