Album Review

The most atypical and sublimely beautiful of Howard Shore's myriad collaborations with filmmaker David Cronenberg. Though inspired by the opera that is the source material for Cronenberg's feature, M. Butterfly largely eschews traditional Chinese music in favor of delicate, textured melodies characterized by their uncommon restraint. Employing feather-light strings, woodwinds, and harp, the music boasts a natural simplicity far removed from the bleak, foreboding electronics that characterize Shore's best-known efforts but retains the formal innovation and atmospheric mastery that are his hallmarks.

Great tracks

Both the opening track and the closing track (which runs during the credits of the film) are particular favorites of mine. They are very touching as far as a soundtrack goes and fit this movie very well. Being a composer myself, I choose these cuts by Howard Shore to be some of my all-time favorites. Also touching is the rousing rendition of Un Bel Di from Madama Butterfly, which made me appreciate Opera much more. Although the film itself didn't fare very well with many, I recommend this soundtrack to movie music lovers as a must-have for your collection.
