Hues of Magenta

Magenta is defined as "a primary subtractive color for light." I can't think of a more accurate description for this EP. On "M," part of the CMY(K) project, McRoberts grapples with the unanswered questions and doubts common to people of faith, those without, those who've found it and lost it, and everyone in between.

"Diseases That Have Cures" is a sobering slap to the face about the unrequited questions to and about God. The lyrics point to the wrestling one does when trying to "come to terms" with God. McRoberts doesn't attempt to answer the question "why would a good God allow bad things to happen to good people," but rather asks the question so many shy away from. The violins are beautiful behind the lyrics "they say you're faithful like the sun, I watch it rise most every day, but if I stand here still and wait here long enough, the sun will also go away."

It is a work of weaving all of our stories together, paying close attention to the questions that bring us together. It is a work that points to redemption and honoring one another, despite our disagreements and disputes. It is a work that points to both the truth that is in all of our stories in both the highs and lows.

(Sidenote: "33" is one of the most powerful songs on the EP. Anyone who knows McRoberts' story understands the depth of the lyrics as he points to breaking generational strongholds.)

Taller than Rumors have Reported

Another great release from one of my all-time favorite independent artists. Justin McRoberts' music once again proves to be heartfelt, thought provocative, and easy on the ears. I highly recommend Justin McRoberts' previous releases, too.

Magenta is a Powerful Color

McRoberts’s CMY(K) project is taking form beautifully. While the first EP, “C”, was an enjoyable mixture of the types of songs McRoberts does well, it didn’t prepare me for the profound construction of “M.” I guess magenta is powerful color, because this five-song album is singing/songwriting at its best. Three tracks, “Heaven Knows I Want To”, “Courage To Believe”, and “Diseases That Have Cures” have joined my favorites among those of an artist who already has very impressive discography. This EP should satisfy McRoberts’s fans, and serve as a great starting point for those who may be curious about his unique work. You really can’t lose with this one.
