Saru is awesome!. This album is perfect for chilling out late night.
An artist in evolution, a sonic revolution.
I've had Downtempo Dojo for years and it is still in rotation on my playlists. Though great, it was in the same mold as many other "down tempo" albums of the same era -- with much better quality. Machine is a radical departure from both his earlier work and his perceived genre. Off-kilter beats, amazing sounds and grooves make this a stellar work in ANY category. Growth in an artist is a great thing to see and Saru is progressing into the premier electronic artist working today.
Years in progress, worth the wait
Gorgeous electronic downtempo, evolved from the renowned 2001 album Downtempo Dojo, Machine is Saru's second album (not counting his limited-run soundtrack to the documentary "Yang Paling Hina"). It starts with a detuned radio and electronics with a hint of regret and darkness, and wanders from there. Technology rumbles, chatters and becomes personal, but never outright cheery. Where Dojo featured dubbed out organic instrumentals, Machine is more of a crisp Bladerunner view of the none-too-shiny future. Never turning so cold as to be termed pure electro, some tracks feature more living elements, with "Artificial Heart" bringing back live-sounding percussion, and "Internal Diagnostic" has what sounds like a loop string pattern hidden behind a tangle of wires and gears. The album ends much as it began, with electronic effects fading out, leaving you somewhere in the future, hopeful for things to come.
