Maestro of Mambo

The Palladium Mambo era could arguably be called one of the seminal eras of American and especially New York music and dance. The music the Machito Orchestra lays down here proves the point. The sound quality has a warm nuance, typical of its era, that makes it very appealing. The highlights for me are the classic "Babarabatiri" and the killer "Dale Jamon". From the "comin' up right behind you" bottom of the bass and congas to the explosive conversations at the top by the horn section and, of course, the vocals of Machito layering right in-between, the music here is classic. As Tito Puente used to say at his shows "can you feel it?" The answer is a resounding "YES".

GREAT LIVE MAMBO SOUND CAPTURED

Having been a follower of the fabulous Machito sound for nearly 50 years it was a pleasure to listen to a new recording of his featuring the OLD SCHOOL mambo sound of the past, as it happened then, Live. Listening to this recording made me feel like I was there; dancing to his music as I did in the fifties. Are there more like these??

At its roaring best, the band had a hard-charging sound, loaded with jostling, hyperactive bongos and congas and razor-edged riffing brass. Machito was the front man, singing, conducting, shaking maracas, while his brother-in-law Mario Bauza was the innovator behind the scenes, getting Machito to hire jazz-oriented arrangers....
