Powerful Music, Powerful Performance, Disappointing Intonation
John Mackey is a world class composer, and "Hymn to a Blue Hour" is a fantastic musical creation. Likewise, Kevin Geraldi is at the top of his profession, and always produces quality recordings of new, exciting wind ensemble literature. So when I found out that John Mackey was going to personally release "Hymn to a Blue Hour" on iTunes with Kevin Geraldi and the UNCG Wind Ensemble, I was very excited to add this gorgeous piece of music to my personal collection. Unfortunately, I was expecting much better. While Geraldi leads the UNCG Wind Ensemble in a highly emotional performance of a deeply inspired work, there are glaring intonation problems all over the place. From the first entrance(s) of the horns to the final oboe solo, I instantly thought to myself, "Wow, this work really deserves a better rendering." And while I believe that a better rendering WILL eventually come, it is my opinion that Mr. Mackey needs to be careful not to rush to publish studio recorded music that doesn't meet basic standards. In writing this review, I am not attempting to criticize Mr. Mackey, Mr. Geraldi, or the UNCG Wind Ensemble in any way. I'm just trying to give an honest account of what I heard - and it wasn't a "5-Star" performance.
PHENOMENAL
Not a single piece of Mackey's music disappoints, and this is one I've been waiting to hear a quality recording of ever since the MIDI was released. The MIDI was gorgeous, but the legitimate recording is awe-inspiring. Worth way more than 99 cents in my opinion. Buy it you won't be disappointed
Lyrical and evocative
In a bit of a departure from the rhythmically driven works Mackey is best known for, this piece washes over the listener with lyricism and unabashed beauty. The performance by Geraldi and the players of UNCG is astonishingly expressive. Highly recommended.
