iTunes Review
Considering Madonna’s dominance and constant reinvention of pop music for several decades, it’s difficult to imagine a time when she was simply another struggling performer finding her voice in a changing musical landscape. Madonna’s 1983 debut album may have reflected the MTV-era in its visual appeal, but sonically she was searching among different producers (this album features three) to find her groove. Her preference for dance music would hardly seem the choice for someone looking to establish an enduring career (dance divas weren’t known for longevity) and while her choice of material was spot-on — “Lucky Star,” “Borderline” and “Holiday” are as catchy as they come and worthy of both radio and the dancefloor — they only hint at the complex imagery and musical adventurism that would lead her to bring the avant-garde and the kinky New York nightlife to the mainstream with each ensuing release. “Burning Up” hints at her darker side. “Physical Attraction” standardizes the course she would take. This is where it began.

1.29
by d@nniWhy is every song 1.29? iTunes needs is over charging us. They are saving money by not using plastic and delivery, yet, the songs are more expensive. No thanks!!!
Was a fan in the 80s . . .
by tj0265And was going to download some of my favorites until I noticed that EVERY madonna song is a $1.29 what's up with that?! That makes sense for her more recent stuff, but the songs that are 20+ years old too?! Pass.
A Girl Power Revolution
by MatrixVoomDirty, gritty, and sexuaally charged, nothing since Michael Jackson's Billie Jean had parents scandalized more than Madonna's premier album. This is a masterpiece in music history, not so much for what the album is, but what it unleashed on the American children of the 80's. From her dirty hair, crucifix worn around her neck, the laced glove (an ode to Michael Jackson) and her exposed belly button, kids raced home after school to watch MTV's Top Ten Video Countdown every day to watch this video and hoping their parents did not come home early from work.
What most people born after 1980 do not realize is that this album was an underground album. In 1983, no one had ever heard of this spicy girl from New York. In fact the album was released a long time before people started to notice her. Only the coolest of the cool knew about Madonna in the midwest. She brought this New York sensibility to middle America that had not been experienced since the age of Disco in the 70's.
The most revolutionary significance of this album is how it made girls feel. With this album, girls rebelled like nothing before. They found their power and sexuality and were not ashamed to express it, much to the chagrin of their parents. There were girls from 10 on up dressing like prositutes and spinning around to Holiday. This set off a revolution like none other.
And in the repressive conservative Reagan era, Madonna was a rebellious breath of fresh air. If you were anti-establishment, you blared these sexy, poppy, stick it to the man spins.
Unfortunately, two decades later, most of this album does not hold up, mainly because she had so many more artistic albums waiting. But if you want to go back in time and relive the cool of the 80's, Borderline, Lucky Star, and Holiday are the spins to have. A classic masterpiece first album from arguably the best star of the 80's decade.
