iTunes Review

Magic Time is reminiscent of nearly every classic Van Morrison album since Moondance, but it’s not an exercise in nostalgia. It’s a mature and energetic synthesis of styles, encompassing blues, R&B, pop ballads, swing jazz, and soul, and it's one of his best albums of the past two decades. Surrounded by a locked-in and loose band, complete with horn section, Morrison offers ten original songs and three covers, including inspired versions of the pop classics “This Love of Mine” and “I’m Confessin.’” Morrison blows some solid harp on several tunes, such as “Keep Mediocrity at Bay” in which he waxes philosophical over a country blues shuffle. Whether tackling a muddy blues burner or a lush, tender ballad, Morrison’s voice is strong and pure, and he genuinely sounds like he’s enjoying himself. And when you’re sounding this sharp, what’s not to feel good about? But if this appears to be reading too much into Morrison’s mental health, check out the final seconds of the album. After the funky plea of “Carry On Regardless” fades, you hear him first mock yodel, then laugh heartily and say “I’m having too much fun!” And it shows.

Magic Time

"Magic Time" is the best song here. "Just Like Greta" is a close second. Check out "They sold me out", "The lion this time," and of course "Stranded". Dont get me wrong the whole album is great. These are the highlights for me. And I know I'm a little late for this, but for the person who said their dad makes them listen to this in the car. I m only 27 and I make my dad listen to it in the car. Just because your taste in music is different that that of your dads, that doesnt mean that somehow he or the music he listens to is uncool. You ever heard of the Band or the Last Waltz. Go buy it on blu ray and see if you think thats cool. or rent the movie as good as it gets with Jack Nicholson and watch the scene in the car when Jack plays "Days Like This", thats cool. That movie is how I discovered Van. Anyway, back to my point. Where's your soul man?

Picked It Up At Starbucks In San Diego...

Went to San Diego for Christmas, and got this CD for myself @ Starbucks.

Van has tried to "Keep Mediocrity At Bay" by playing Jazz instead of 3-chord 'Rock 'n' Roll'. That makes his music much deeper than the notes, just like his lyrics are much deeper than the words (in his best songs).

Each one of us (Van's long term fans) has a song by Van that defies explanation as to why it grabs your soul. Sometimes a whole album does that - "Moondance" and "Into The Music" come to mind (for me). "Stranded" seems to be that song from this album.

Celtic New Year is Van Morrison at His Best!

by hrbartlett141

Not the best Van Morrison attempt but definately check out Celtic New Year, Track 2. It has an excellent melody. Also if you are interested in Van Morrison's Christian songs, check out They Sold Me Out, Track 12.

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Equal parts blue-eyed soul shouter and wild-eyed poet-sorcerer, Van Morrison is among popular music's true innovators, a restless seeker whose incantatory vocals and alchemical fusion of R&B, jazz, blues, and Celtic folk produced perhaps the most spiritually transcendent body of work in the rock...
