iTunes Review

Magnificent Fiend does not play like a sophomore effort. The songs on Howlin' Rain's second coming are so well written and recorded that it sounds like Ethan Miller and company have been banging out records for decades. The album overflows with vintage amplifier-burning boogie rock, and although the songs are saturated in the borrowed tones of bygone Barbary Coast bands like early Grateful Dead and Creedence Clearwater Revival, there are a couple crucial elements saving Howlin' Rain from dead retro panning. First of all, singer Ethan Miller continues to import the dark sonic scuzz and sideways thinking arrangements from his other band, Comets On Fire. Secondly, Rick Rubin's  innovative production values allow Magnificent Fiend to choogle harder than CCR, but with unpredictable dips and detours into previously uncharted sonic topography, all the while making sure that it doesn't sound like Miller recorded his raspy wail while wearing Chris Robinson's brown suede fringed jacket. Take away those two elements and organ grinding gospel rave-ups like "Lord Have Mercy" could easily be mistaken for Delaney & Bonnie outtakes — not that there's anything remotely wrong with that.

Solid Rock

These guys are great. Found them from Comets on Fire. CoF album "Avatar" is another solid album. These guys are totally rad. Both albums are great. I like to explain CoF album "Avatar" as the lost Pink Floyd album. But don't get me wrong, Comets on Fire stands on their own feet; they are not some cover band. Avatar is one of my favorite albums I own. And these two albums by Howlin Rain are slowly gaining rank. Howlin' Rain is Lynard Skynard hanging out with Led Zeppelin, Traffic and the Allman Brothers and sometimes letting Bad Company and Boston come to the party. I really don't like Bad Company or Boston; I just like the reference. Ethan Miller is the man. I flip flop as to which Howlin' Rain album I like more. The keys seem to be a little more nasty on this album. Who doesn't like some keyboard.

I can't belive they labeled this as pop

This rocks! These guys bring it. I know they incorporate some 60's psychadelic type vibe into their music, but there is something very original here that I can't quite put my finger on.

super cool

Muse+Jimi Hendrix+Pink Floyd = Howlin Rain. great sound, kinda has a LSD trip type feel to them. super cool style and amazing music sense.

Biography

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Unapologetically influenced by the strong but easygoing grooves of West Coast '70s rock, Howlin Rain represented something of a change of pace for guitarist and singer Ethan Miller, who previously fronted the psychedelic noise rock ensemble Comets on Fire. After the recording of Comets on Fire's final album, Avatar, in 2006, Miller was eager to explore the more melodic direction the group began pursuing, and with bassist Ian Gradek (who had known Miller since high school) and drummer John Moloney...
