In my humble opinion, there is simply no other performance of this symphony worth listening to. I have heard them all, and Bernstein/ N.Y. are the only group to get it right. You come away from this performance with the feeling that you have composed this music yourself, so deeply will you identify with it. A truly spiritual experience awaits those who have the time to turn down the lights, take the phone off the hook, turn up the volume (or put on the headphones), and let the music transform you. Trust me. Trust the music.
Fantastic
Bernstein had a special connection with the music of Gustav Mahler, and it certainly shows in this recording. Bernstein's interpretation is thrilling and emotional, especially in the finale ("Mit aufschwung..."). Great singing by the chorus and good playing by the NY Philharmonic. The best recording of Mahler 2 I've heard, and one of Bernstein's best recordings of Mahler's works.
The crowning jewel of Mahler 2
As other reviewers have said, the conclusion is worth the entire album. However, not the entire album is worth the twenty bucks required. Bernstien's first movement is meant to be scary and despserate. The satire of the third movement is virtually unrivled. The conclusion is almost in a class of its own. This Mahler 2 is the crowning jewel of the piece and it truly resurrected Mahler's reputation. However, this isn't the best Mahler 2 out there. I can name three better Mahler 2's off the top of my head: 1. Gergiev/LSO 2. Klemperer/Symphonyorchester des bayershien rundfunks, 3. Rattle/CBSO. The reason why this version isn't best is that Gergiev really gets every detail of every second of the symphony. The pianos are quiet and emotionally filled, while the fortes are terrifying and well shaped. His dynamic contrast with powerful bass and unrivaled brass wins him best Mahler 2. Klemperer truly gets the feeling of sins being dragged along, and truly is the second best Mahler 2 out there. Rattle's very good, but something is lost because his version is from a studio. So there you have it. Buy this recording if you want the crowning jewel of Mahler 2, and buy Gergiev's if you want the best mahler 2.
