Taking a cue from ‘60s girl groups such as the Ronettes and the Crystals, and the Phil Spector “Wall of Sound” in general, Maintentant is sweet, sincere, and executed with delicate skill. A collaborative work between Nick Krgovich, who wrote the songs, producer/engineer Colin Stewart, and a chorus of singers that includes Rose Melberg, Mirah, and Kurt Blau, this is a group effort that comes across like a concept album or a soundtrack to a musical. The lyrics are centered on themes of innocence, sentimental romance, and heartache, and even when clunky, which they occasionally are, the songs remain charming and refreshing. There are a dozen or so different singers in all yet the album is beautifully cohesive due to this lyrical thread as well as the consistently sublime arrangements. Smooth melodies and grand, sweeping choruses are sweetened with horns, soaring strings, handclaps, and wonderful harmonies. There’s a definite element of nostalgia at work here that adds to the enjoyment but it’s much more than that — solid songcraft never goes out of style.

The Amazing Catalyst of the 60s Revival
This album is simply amazing, bounding with joy and hope, the two qualities that propelled the earlier part of the 60s to define a generation. With the recent deluge of 60s revival artists, from M. Ward to Feist to Lykke Li, this album has the movement to push open a new era of music in a world much devoid of it, at least in the mainstream. The favorite on this repertoire has got to be "Strolling Past the Old Graveyard" with its bursting entrance, horns, and unbelievably catchy refrain. I really have hope innovative music with an eye looking back onto the past is going to develop in the next decade with the likes of Maintenant. Lets hope Gigi becomes a relevant member on the music scene maintenant et toujours.
