iTunes Review

When Thrice gave producer Dave Schiffman the demos for its seventh studio album, he thought the group was making a grunge record. But the rock power overflowing from Major/Minor is more of a reaction to the quartet’s preceding LP, Beggars, which was somewhat of an electro-emo affair. Even before “Yellow Belly” opens, we hear buzz from a vintage tube amplifier, hinting at the punchy guitar tones about to fly from your speakers. The song cleverly blends a nod to old-school emo with a tastefully modern and upfront production that sounds like it’s coming straight off the studio’s mixing monitors. “Promises” plays like an homage to sounds from the Pacific Northwest of the early ‘90s, replete with gigantic guitar distortion grinding against harmonic leads as Dustin Kensrue rails against the dissolve of marriage in society. Similarly, “Cataracts” chugs with meaty riffs and winding leads.

Love these guys!

I've got to admit, I'm not completely sold yet, but I wasn't with Beggars either. Beggars is now one of my favorite albums. Its just hard to get a grasp on how much their sound is evolving with each album. I know a lot of fans that were there in the beginning, but aren't anymore. I personally can't help but respect the way they strive to achieve new sound (and in most cases master it in the process) as they grow. Now, I don't know if they'll ever have another Vheissu, but I honestly don't care. I hope Dustin and the guys make music until they're gray. I've never been moved by any kind music like I have that of Thrice's. At this point its an addiction, and I don't plan on rehab.

Wow

I'm speechless. Never before have I encountered a band in this era that can so artfully and tactfully vary their sound so well album to album and retain its fan base. This might be the best, most 'complete' album Thrice has produced. I'd say it's a cross of Vheissu and Beggars. Magical. Everyone who appreciates great rock music, or music in general, will love this album. Even if you're not a rock fan, it's almost impossible not to respect what they've done. My favorite tracks are "Call it In the Air" "Blur" "Words in the Water" "Anthology" and "Disarmed"

Nevermind, they're all great.

Pure Genius

Regardless of what people have been saying, this band continues to grow and become better. This album is inspiring. These guys never fail to impress me.

Years Active: '00s, '10s

The post-hardcore quartet Thrice formed in 1998 in Irvine, California. Guitarist/vocalist Dustin Kensrue, guitarist Teppei Teranishi, bassist Eddie Breckenridge, and drummer Riley Breckenridge all knew each other from high school and the neighborhood skate park, and the usual round of practices, music competitions, and local gigs helped hone their new band's sound. By late 1999, Thrice had amassed enough material to cut a proper record. Working with Death by Stereo's Paul Miner, the quartet recorded...
