Album Review
Guitarist Doug White's new group, following a fractious split with his former bandmates in Tearwave, perhaps unsurprisingly continues a fair amount of the post-shoegaze spirit of that band, with echo, reverb, and lush guitar textures aplenty. There's also singer Emma Willis providing a similar contrast against the electronic wash and sometimes overload with her keening, swooping voice, and other comparison points can be made. But Makaras Pen, if building on familiar ground, deserve recommendation for their own qualities, especially in a time when shoegaze and its immediate antecedents have rarely had so much cachet among newer bands. Beginning with the strong "Currents," which alone demonstrates the group's ability to not only perform a song well but ratchet up the performance to more powerful levels as it progresses, the 11-song album sets a consistent mood — both positive and a bit of a drawback. In the latter case, the band's fine performances and songs tend to blend together, a rich combination of rhythm-heavy songs with shimmering guitar that turns into blasting feedback as Willis soars along that is almost like a too-rich dessert over the course of the album's full length. But individually, songs like "Sacrifice," especially with the sudden punctuation of Dennis Caswell's drumming, and "Falling Deeper," with its lovely chorus and instrumental break, help vary things a touch. Also, "Tightrope" has to get some credit just for the near black metal howling toward the end — it's an out-of-nowhere addition but works perfectly well in context.

A different kind of shoegaze!
I found Makaras Pen on the Projekt website, and I am so glad I did! This is what shoegaze should be...atmospheric, but not even close to being mellow or boring! The vocals are stellar, and the production is done well! Great album, guys!
Very disappointing...
I feel bad for saying this since I'm a long time Tearwave fan. I love supporting bands like this, signed to smaller labels, especially shoegaze groups. I'm a shoegazer musician myself, so this is my favorite musical genre, period. However, this album is just awkward :( The vocal style does not match the moods. It's hard to describe, but I'll put it like this; It's not that vocalist Emma WIllis is not an amazing singer. She does have a really beautiful voice. And it's not the band either. It's just the way they combined everything together. It just feels "forced". On most of the songs, it sounds as though the vocals are rushed to try and fit in as many words and syllables as possible just to keep the content in there, like a small brochure that tries to fit in too much literature, and the text gets smaller, more crowded until it feels too busy to read. Sort of like a newspaper vs a billboard. I kept hearing this and thinking "This vocal would have sounded so much better if they took just one or two words out! The singing would have felt more relaxed, more natural, less rushed"
Some good points:
As I mentioned, I still enjoy listening to Emma's voice. Very angelic :) "Falling deeper" is one of my fav's, which has some very dynamic moods and changes going on. Love this track.
"Promises" is another strong track that easily hooks you in. Great vocal melody that can instantly give you goosebumps. But then as the song advances, the vocal does not really go anywhere - it sort of stays in the exact same range, and after 2 minutes, can start to sound mono-toned :( I love the heavy distorted guitars. They create a really powerful moment in the songs, but the vocals could have elevated the song along with the guitars as well. I was hoping that the vocals would change, maybe to a higher melody when the heavy guitars kicked in for a more "in-your-face" dramatic effect.
I'll still continue to support Makara's Pen because, again, I love the shoegaze and support keeping it alive. Hopefully the band's next effort will show some maturity in combining their musical styles.
Cheers!
