A Snapshot of the Late '90's - some great music here
If you somehow found yourself transported back in time to 1998 and you went to have a happy hour beer at The Windjammer on the Isle of Palms, or Bar None in Columbia, the bartender would have played you some of these songs. Then you could’ve wandered over to The Elbow Room to see them performed live for $4. The two artists featured that you can actually find elsewhere on iTunes are Edwin McCain and Cravin’ Melon. I probably heard “Come Undone” at least once every day of 1997. Three artists worth spending the $0.99 on are The Root Doctors (still around), Treadmill Trackstar (broke up after a major label fiasco – if you can find cds of “Excessive Use of The Passive Voice” or “Only This” on disc – buy them) and Uncle Mingo (in a real-job/family-life pseudo limbo for several years, performing semi-annually in the Charleston SC area when they feel like it). “Friends” is off of the Uncle Mingo cd “Little Baby Brother” – an absolute must buy if you can find it. This is some great music – a snapshot of a great live music scene that really thrived for what now seems like a very short time – it’s cool to finally see some of it on iTunes, even in an obscure sampler like this. Now that I think about it – if you’re reading this, you were probably looking for one of those songs anyway – Four stars for 4 great songs.
Why is this under hip-hop/rap?
Wow. A blast from the past. This CD is a compilation of the radio show I (Kristi York)conceived and hosted on B93.7 in Greenville, SC back in the '90s. It was actually released in early '97, not '99 as listed. I wonder how this CD made it onto iTunes, considering it was originally for charity ... so we'll need to look into who's getting the proceeds from this one - because it's not the bands, I can assure you that (my hubby was in the Blow Up) . At any rate, I'm glad this music from South Carolina is getting some exposure. Aaron Whisnant of Albert Hill is one of the great unsung heroes of that era - check out his other work on iTunes if you get a chance. Peace.
Great, but no FWF?
This is a great compilation, but where is Five Way Friday, they are a must fo shizzle!
