Album Review
Produced by David Miner, Making Light has a somewhat more polished surface than Pierce Pettis' previous albums, yet that doesn't diminish the quiet power of his songs.

PRECISE UNDERTAKING
When you first venture into Pettis, youwonder if he is a quirky literate Lyle Lovett or a slightly demure David Wilcox. And the answer is a solemn, Yes. This thoughtful (as always) release features some of Pettis' best songwriting. He provides a lighthearted but heartbreaking view of life as an on-the-road songwriter in My Life of Crime. His optimistic broken heart comes out in songs such as Hold on to that Heart and No Big Deal. Heart features some of the "overproduction" referred to in the album review. Perhaps the highlights of this album are his two dealing with Biblical subjects. Miriam, a spacious and deep tune, reflects on Jesus' mother in a unique way - fromt he midieval artistic rendition of her to the reality of a teenage pregnancy. Absolom, Absolom is beautiful in its tragic first person tale of David seeing his rebellious son hung for treason. This album is a must grab for Pettis fans. And since this was the first Pettis album I ever heard, I recommend for those wanting to test the waters. You won't be dissapointed.
