Bravo Maestro!!
The classically educated, prodigious, versatile band leader Tito Puente holds a top place on the mantle of mambo era masters. This work is an outstanding tribute to the man best known as the "King of Mambo" by one of the afro-Cuban genre’s most devoted student and teacher. This album is a wonderful glimpse of a time when the sounds of orchestras filled the iconic New York venues the Palladium and Roseland ballrooms to perform for the loyal followers of a musical style that combines complex afro-Cuban rhythms that percolated from Africa through the tropics with the full bodied harmonics found in big-band swing.
Released nearly 10 years after his passing, this album is a stirring tribute to Puente and his music and an appreciated gift to his many devotees. The future of the "big-band" style may be uncertain due to real-world economic pressures, requiring larger than life personalities, like that of Puente's, to sustain the longevity of orchestras such as his. Yet, we are brought forward through the wonderful renditions of some of the afro-Cuban orchestra’s most popular titles: from the full swag of the sax section displayed in the swinging mambo Yambeque, the playful interwoven solos of Cuban Nightmare, to the sophisticated vibe play on Autumn Leaves. Through the dedication of master musicians and teachers like Bobby Sanabria and the class of musicians that participated with him on this album, we are provided with a very promising view of the genre’s future. Bravo!!
