Album Review
Marc Cohn is one of the finest debut albums of the 1990s, and it brought adult piano pop back to the radio. Every song is well-crafted, and Cohn's singalong choruses, introspective lyrics, and vocal stylings reveal his '60s soul and '70s singer/songwriter influences. His voice is rich, but has a roughness that adds emotion when stretching to the upper end of his range while remaining subtle at the lower end. Marc Cohn shows himself to be an accomplished and versatile songwriter, from the uplifting gospel opener "Walking in Memphis," the hit for which he is widely known, to the concluding love letter "True Companion." Cohn has a great ear for melody and a keen eye for detail that immediately grab your attention and reward the listener with repeated plays. The album's highlight, "Silver Thunderbird," is a prime example of Cohn's ability to combine storytelling with an unbelievably catchy chorus. It is not surprising that the songs played on piano work better than those written for guitar; however, the album is surprisingly consistent, even for a debut. This album is worth checking out for any listener who wonders where the tuneful pop and soul of the Big Chill era went.

One hit wonder???
I just found out that Marc Cohn is on the one hit wonder iTunes compilation and I am shocked! He has so many great songs; the Marc Cohn album is amazing from beginning to end. When I saw him last week he played some new stuff that was just out of this world, I can't wait for his new record. It's always amazed me that he has stayed somewhat obscure most people only know "Walking in Memphis", he has so much more and I encourage anyone who likes Walking in Memphis to download his live album or any of his others!!!! In my humble opinion he is the best singer songwriter of his time and certainly the most underappreciated from a radio and pop standpoint. I'm still waiting for that moment in time when everyone discovers how great his music is and he experiences a latent surge of popularity and I know that will happen. But for now I'm just happy he's touring and making music. There's no one better!!!
Better even more live
After seeing Marc Cohn live so many times I always thought he should put an album together based off of his live performances. (besides some of the bootleggs floating around) This is a great listen and you can hear Marc's passion through the songs he plays. This album helps the "wait" until the next time you can see him perform again. If you like Marc Cohn's music, you will love this album.
A live gem
A terrific compilation from start to finish. "Silver Thunderbird" comes alive with the great supporting harmonies from Marc's band. "Dig Down Deep" has more energy and soul than the original recording, which is great unto itself. And the mix of great songs from the vastly underrated "Rainy Season" really jump out in live form, including the title track, "She's Becoming Gold," and "Walk Through the World." And just when you thought you've heard the classic "Walking in Memphis" one too many times, take a listen to this live version, which Marc sings with more verve than ever. This is a truly great live album to sample, and really captures how great it is to see Marc perform in person.
