iTunes Review
If one heavy metal album can be said to define a genre, then Metallica's 1986 release Master of Puppets, their third, deserves to stand as the definitive heavy metal album of the 1980s, encapsulating all its strengths in one firm wallop. It's a rare achievement: a crossover hit that compromises nothing. Much like their previous album Ride the Lightning but with even stronger material, Master of Puppets blends metal's natural aggression with subtle shifts in dynamics and expanded compositional textures to expand and refine its sonic reach. "Battery" leads things off withthe unforgiving pummel of their earliest thrash, but the eight-and-a-half minute title track delivers a complex sermon on feelings of human powerlessness and overreaching authority backed by an arrangement that is cinematic in scope, displaying the group's moodiest overtures alongside its most direct attack. The playing is airtight throughout — the instrumental"Orion" a showcase for the group's syncopated intuition — with the songs thematically united as well, offering up a world on the brink of chaos and insanity. "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," "Disposable Heroes" and "Leper Messiah" are textbook cases of adolescent rage and frustration towards an uncaring system.
Customer Reviews
The Reign of Blood Falls to Damage Inc.
Ever have an argument with any friends over what is the Heaviest Metal Album of all time? The two main albums in question are Slayer- Reign of Blood, and of course Metallica- Master of Puppets. The two albums are good competition. I enjoy a little Slayer, but Metallica has overpowered Slayer's Reign and established a new generation of heavy metal that lasts to this very day. There is not one disappointing track on this album. It all is amazing. Battery- Amazing introduction to the album! Master of Puppets- Who could forget the song that ranked #52 on Guitar World's Top 100 Guitar Solos? (Metallica's highest song on the list is "One" at #7) The Thing That Should Not Be- Another song that is just a mystery to the public, yet amazing. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)- This song I believe is Metallica's second best guitar solo ever. Ever get that inside trapped feeling? Disposable Heroes- This song actually influenced me to write a song about the army and how it is STILL run like this. This song bashes the military in, brutally. Leper Messiah- Interesting, but can be a bit offensive. Orion- Amazing Instrumental! Damage Inc. Best song lyric of all time dwells in this song! "F*** it all, and f***ing no regrets!" Anyone who says this album is horrible, should be banned from listning to Metallica. This album was history already when the "Great American Pioneers of Metal" released it! Buy it, remove Slayer's Reign of Blood from your wall, place this album up where Reign of Blood was, and enjoy this masterpiece. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
Master Of Puppets
The greatest metal album ever written. You could argue otherwise, but you would be wrong.
