Album Review

Verve's Jacques Brel Master Series is identical to the first disc of Polygram International's Jacques Brel Master Serie, which means that the criticisms of the latter (for example, songs like "La Chanson de Jacky" and "Le Moribund" being excluded) are only magnified because, thanks to the lack of the second disc, "Les Biches" and "Rosa," among others, are missing. Still, what remains makes for a decent collection, with plenty of notable Brel songs, including "Mathilde," "Amsterdam," "Jef," and "Au Suivant."

A Master

Jacques Brel was born in Belgium, where average citizens speak and understand French, Flemish, Dutch and more English than the first reviewer will ever understand of any of these languages. His World Cup prediction (wrong) is yet another example of why the world calls us ugly Americans. He was a genius and his work lives on through voices like Nina Simone, Ute Lemperer, Judy Collins as well as Elly Stone. The real world...the one most Americans neglect in their insularity will continue to love and praise Mr. Brel's work.

Classic

Jacques Brel is a great introduction for anyone interested in Chanson Francais. Many American artists have covered Brel songs in English, and it's really easy to find web translations for most of the lyrics.

Fantastique

As a teenager who loves older music (though many teens don't) and for one who's learning French, Brel is a great singer to listen to, he speaks so clearly it makes it easy to understand what he's talking about while being able to relax and listen to a soft voice with passion.
