iTunes Review
Monster Magnet’s Dave Wyndorf is an old school stoner-doom-metal guy who loves his Stooges mixed with a little Hawkwind and a spritz of garage rock. His 1998 release Powertrip was a definitive hard-rock statement and Mastermind revisits its playbook with a few new harmonic twists. “Hallucination Bomb” trudges with a powerful grudge that’s matched by the whiplash riff that guides the title track. “Dig That Hole” channels Jim Morrison, who is further quoted in the psychedelic garage-rock of “Time Machine.” “Gods and Punks” and “Perish In Fire” build with a punkish skip in their steps while “100 Million Miles” is about as close to a hardcore punk tune as this barbiturate-laced music can get. “Ghost Story” is a kicking, swaggering piece of hard-rock pop. “The Titan Who Cried Like a Baby” plays with a cinematic sweep. The world may very well end with the doomed tonalities of “When the Planes Fall from the Sky.” Monster Magnet know how to pull out all of the hard rock and punk moves they need to remain on top of the landfill. The “Deluxe Version” includes several notable cuts and a video for “Gods and Punks.”

Monster Magnets best LP since Powertrip!
After three good albums, Monster Magnet blasts the ceiling off once again with "Mastermind", which is undoubtably their best work since 1998's Powertrip. There's not a single weak or filler track to be heard, Wydorf's songwriting is spectacular and the Bullgod shows he can out rock and out sing the 2000's/2010's slew of rock musicans despite being over twice their age! The 1-2-3 punch of "Bored with Socery", "Dig that Hole" and "Gods and Punks" is a lightling bolt straght to the brain; it's one of the most memorable sequences of tracks you'll find. "Mastermind" "Perish in Fire", "Time Machine" and "When the Planes fall from the Sky" are gems too. Mastermind is a must buy and a true return to form from one of the greatest(and underrated) rock bands in the last twenty years.
Happy Happy, Joy Joy
I stumbled upon this band at the record store one day, when I spied Powertrip on the shelf. I bought it because I had vague recollections of having heard of the band, and since I have a taste for sludgey, yank-your-spine-out riffs, I grabbed it on a whim. I then proceeded to buy everything (available online or storefront, that is) the group has put out. There are some Super Greats (Superjudge, Spine of God and Dopes to Infinity come immediately to mind) , but this album, Mastermind is right up near the top of a very short list of my very favorite MM works. Recommended.
Awesome
Monster Magnet is back with one of the best albums of the year!
