it's always so!
i've been following joel's work since his early days in automatic badger, and it's remarkable how nuanced and lyrical his songwriting has become. it would be easy to peg his music as standard singer/songwriter fare, but his arrangements are much more thoughtful and enveloping, letting textures wind themselves around melodies to achieve a full wash of sound that doesn't knock you back, but instead invites you in. truly outstanding stuff. so glad the new album is here!!
Tasty tunes and great production
When I first listened to this album I realized that there is a lot more to crafting a great song than writing the chord changes and a melody. The arrangements on this album are extremely creative and work very well. It gives you a lot to explore over repeated listens.
After hearing the songs a second and third time, I found the subtleties and expressive qualities come through even more. That leads me to Molly, my favorite song on the album. What a great song – it’s so well done. The poignant lyrics are matched by wonderful guitar work and some truly fantastic instrumental moments. Bird in a Gilded Cage has some strikingly good guitar work and there are some great harmonies on Drive Away. Overall, this is an outstanding 2nd album from this up and coming song writer.
