Album Review

This split features two of Epitaph's brightest young things, Matchbook Romance and Motion City Soundtrack. Both contribute new songs as well as acoustic/otherwise messed-with versions of older tracks. Matchbook's "In Transit (Over You)" is an atmospheric Radiohead-ish number that eventually trades its acoustic meander for a full-on rock howl. It's a pretty nice song, but Andrew Jordan wins the award for vocal over-emoting. The seat-of-the-pants production ("Recorded and mixed...in 45 minutes," according to the liner notes) works well on "Playing for Keeps," as a band like Matchbook Romance usually favors a lush, overdone studio sound. Motion City Soundtrack performs the new "When 'You're' Around" acoustically here, but it will likely appear on their upcoming full-length in a rockier version. The version of "Sunday Warning" appearing here also benefits from its rough mix. All in all, not a bad little release for fans of these groups; neophytes will be teased for the upcoming releases.

Pretty Awesome

Both Motion City Soundtrack and Matchbook Romance are great bands, and when they join to make a split album, it's a great album! It's cool to hear "When 'You're' Around" in Acoustic. Not so sure about Sunday Warning, but hey, it's MCS. The MR songs are okay, I like "Playing for Keeps" better than the other. All in all, it's a good attempt. 5 Stars for Effort, or something like that...

Good But Not Great

I love Matchbook Romance, and I can tolerate Motion City Soundtrack, that said. I am glad matchbook did one new song and one old song, to give glimpses of where the band was going without isolating old listeners

Matchbook Romance is a melodic hardcore unit from Poughkeepsie, NY. The band started in 1997 when bassist Ryan Kienle, vocalist/guitarist Andrew Jordan, and drummer Aaron Stern's band, Fizzlewink, added guitarist Ryan "Judas" DePaolo and became the Getaway. All computer-savvy, the bandmembers hit the Internet hard, designing their own website and using it for shameless promotion of their wildly emotional take on crashing, midtempo hardcore. The band...
