Album Review
Always down on their luck, always mending a broken heart; Weston have been labeled the punk-rock version of New Kids on the Block. Continuing with this mentality is their third full-length Music From the Soundtrack Matinee, which features a lot of the same happy-go-lucky riffs of their two previous albums. Lots of straightforward, midtempo pop-punk, lots of harmonized backing vocals, but not overdone to the extent of NOFX or Bad Religion. With that combination, Weston pull off some perfect pop songs that make up for the entire first side of this record. But unfortunately, at the same time, a lot of this material is borderline bad alternative rock. Matinee has its moments, with the good outweighing the bad, but it's not as essential as Got Beat Up or A Real Life Story of Teenage Rebellion.
Customer Reviews
Great cover, mediocre album
Tough to give this album high marks because there are some songs which i absolutely love and will always remember from my teens but there are many that are quite uninteresting. Instead of buying the album, buy 'Uninspired' track 5. This has been one of my favorite songs for years.
Vastly Underrated
One of rock's most underrated albums ever. seriously. There is not a weak track on the entire disc. Perfect pop song flows into perfect pop song. In fact "Mrs. Perfect Girl" might be the simplest pop gem ever recorded. Masterful.
Good enough
This album isn't as strong as Got Beat Up but there are very few albums in the genre that can stand up to that record. On it's own though, Matinee delivers. With songs like Uninspired, Matinee, and Record Shop, these are the kind of songs that you will hear once and then they'll never leave your head. Weston was truly brilliant.
