The BEST Durufle integrale you will find
Writing as one who has spent more than half his life as a student of the pipe organ, I can say without hesitation that this is by far the best Durufle integrale I have heard to date. This recording is a perfect marriage of performer and instrument; the performer, frenchman Olivier Latry, is currently one of the most sought-after recitalists in Europe, and the instrument, the large Cavaille-Coll organ at St. Etienne-du-Mont in Paris (which, by the way, was Durufle's own instrument), posesses an incredible tonal palette, more than capable of rendering Durufle's complex writing. The result of this union is a truly breathtaking performance. Maurice Durufle's catalogue of compositions is notably short; however, every piece in that catalogue is a masterpiece. Highlights of Latry's recording are the great Prelude, Adagio and Choral Variations on "Veni creator"; "Prelude and fugue on the name ALAIN", the moving tribute to composer/organist Jehan Alain; and of course the justly famous Toccata from the Opus 5 suite, a piece that highlights what may be the finest keyboard technique in Europe. I am hard-pressed to find a flaw in this recording. At times, the softer portions are a bit muddy, but this is of course due to the space in which the work is recorded and I'm not sure this is avoidable, except at the cost of the overall sound quality. In general, the audio is full, rich, and clear, taking the full sonic spectrum of the spectacular ensemble this organ posesses. In short - this recording is a fantastic buy. If you like Latry's playing, his recording of the Widor Symphonies (in particular, the famous closing Toccata from Symphony no. 5), are excellent as well. Enjoy!
Excellent
Beautiful playing on a wonderful instrument - perfect for this music!

durufle himself always struggled with getting this organ to sound the way he wanted and i can see why. the mixtures are AWFUL and painful to listen to. it sounds like someone is shaking a jar of coins with every note being played with a mixture. and because latry is so eager to use full organ all the time, the result is that this recording is very difficult to listen to. the playing is good but completely overshadowed by the registrations that could make your ears bleed
