May Is a Must Listen
With May, John Kapelos offers a set of finely crafted songs, dynamically arranged and exquisitely performed. He is a literate songwriter who is clearly in love with the play of language -- check out his unusual, striking word choices and inventive, fresh rhymes -- and often peppers his lyrics with cultural references. As a singer, he often employs a kind of sprechstimme, a kind of speech singing, usually on the verses and then launches into a fully sung chorus. The songs themselves are deliciously varied, from the darkly ruminative "On the Day" to the bright, expressive instrumental "Little Bird." There are so many gems here. Particular highlights for me were the soaringly melodic "Flowers for Janca," the sultry and languorous "May Song" which is an ode to "love in inclement weather" and is as gorgeous as the rainy May day it so memorably captures, and the intricately detailed and playfully played "Around the Corner From Ridout Street" which is a portrait of Kapelos' childhood spent in South London, Ontario. I defy anyone to listen to the musically adventurous "Have You Ever Been Low So Down" and not have its insistent groove take up residence in your head. And the closing song, "This Is Where I Live," is a potent statement on the way music can be a place that a listener (or a composer or performer) can locate not only their joy but also their sense of self. It is a brilliant ending for an album imbued with that kind of deeply felt vitality that the best music has. I know that this is music that I will continue to return to and enjoy with deepening pleasure. Highly recommended.
Finally
An album with diverse, intelligent and interesting lyrics, and sounds - and holds my musical attention span as well! Awesome.
"May" all year long!
I know Mr. Kapelos' musical work from his "Syd, the Karaoke Kid" outings. Like those works, the musicianship on "May" is exceptional. But what surprised me is "May's" maturity. Funny, dark, whimsical all at the same time. Very much enjoyed this record and will put it on for my next party.
