Album Review

Maysa showed a lot of promise on this self-titled debut album, which recalls the late-'70s and early-'80s output of soul divas like Chaka Khan, Alicia Myers and Phyllis Hyman, and sometimes shows quiet storm leanings. Most of the songs that the big-voiced, expressive Maysa turns her attention to are straight-up R&B, although she ventures into jazz fusion territory when she scats her way through the Brazilian-influenced "J.F.S." (which is the type of song that wouldn't have been out of place on a Flora Purim, Raul DeSouza or George Duke album of the '70s). At a time when a lot of R&B recordings were entirely electronic, Maysa's producers favor a sleek yet fairly organic approach and combine keyboards with real bass, real guitar, real drums and real horns. Ranging from decent to excellent, Maysa enjoyed some airplay on NAC stations but didn't make the singer a huge name in the R&B world. Nonetheless, this CD is worth searching for if you're an R&B lover.

Customer Reviews

Maysa is one of the best.

Can we change the world, should be our Country's anthum along with Mercy Mercy Me by Marvin, and lest not forget Jesus is Love by Lionel

Gorgeous R&B, anyone?

After making a name for herself as the voice behind jazz/funk band Incognito's biggest hits ("Deep Waters," "Don't You Worry Bout a Thing," "Still a Friend of Mine"), Maysa stretched her wings and wowed us all with her self-titled solo debut. "What About Our Love," "Sexy," and "Alone at Last" proved she could sing straight-up contemporary R&B better than most of the vocalists attempting it on MTV, while "Peace of Mind" and the scatted "J.F.S." (standing for Jazz/Funk/Soul) proved you could take the girl out of Incognito but never fully take Incognito out of the girl. Add the ultra-smooth and classy ballad "Rain Drops" to the mix and you have one of the finest R&B albums since the late-70's heyday of Chaka Khan, Phyllis Hyman, and Angela Bofill. A keeper.

Come On Folks!

How can anyone not love this album and all of Maysa's work? Maysa is bringing it from way down. She has the most romantic voice I ever heard and continues to sing song that touches the heart. Babygirl I love you so much. Keep making it "do what it do".

Maysa was, together with Dolores Duran, the most popular singer/songwriter in the period immediately before bossa nova. A composer since her teens (at 12 she wrote the samba-canção "Adeus," a hit from her first album), Maysa kept throughout her career her appreciation for the sentimental style known as fossa. Nevertheless, Maysa pioneered in the international style of bossa nova in shows at the Olympia (Paris, France), Blue Angel (U.S.), and the Cassino Estoril (Portugal), having had success with...
