iTunes Review

Paul Simon debuted as a post-Bridge Over Troubled Water solo artist quietly, down to the hooded winter coat that shielded his eyes from the buying public. Freed from the strictures of writing for his choirboy-voiced partner, he scuttled any residual cuddliness for a salute to "Armistice Day" ("When I needed a friend she was there/Just like an easy chair") and the revolution-in-the-outer-boroughs laughs of "Me and Julio Down By theSchoolyard." Recorded in New York, San Francisco, Kingston, and Paris with a shifting, equally multicultural crew, Paul Simon quickly established a new writing voice for the boy wonder ("hell of a hockey team") and heralded a new, toughened-up decade as assurely as did the Rolling Stones' records of the period.

Paul Simon (1971 solo)

Paul shows us that he is not only a master musician by himself, but also that he appreciates masters from all over the world. One key example: Hobo's Blues was the first time I heard Stephane Grappelli play his violin, and it led me to find and play Stephane's, and his partner in music, Django Rheinhardt, two of the best modern musicians anywhere. It shows mutual admiration and appreciation----Me and Julio, Peace Like a River, to name a few others, all show his love for Music.

SIMON AT HIS UNDERSTATED BEST

Simon's first two solo records are the best of almost any genre, not to mention the one Simon helped define; singer-songwriter. It's not the hits necesarily that make this collection so powerful (though Mother And Child is one of Simon's best singles), it's the lesser known gems (Peace Like A River, Duncan, Armistice Day) that make this another timeless Simon masterpiece. Aside from the typically brilliant songwriting and pitch perfect production, this record features some of Simons best acoustic guitar playing as well. A must have pop record.
