iTunes Review
Jerry Lee Lewis is timeless — but not ageless. At 74, Lewis has lived a crazy life and his music has worn its scars, often to great effect. His 2010 album, Mean Old Man, is similar to his 2006 release, Last Man Standing, where the studio is jammed with celebrities wishing to pay their respects to a living legend. He sings with a sense of knowing. Whether he’s mocking his own persona on the title track, or moving on over for Kid Rock and Slash on “Rockin’ My Life Away,” the Killer still holds all the cards in the studio as his piano pumps throughout the album like a human heart. Keith Richards joins him for a woozy-boozy version of the Rolling Stones’ “Sweet Virginia.” “Whiskey River,” with Willie Nelson, is a match of two legends. “You Can Have Her” comes off like vintage Sun sessions with Eric Clapton and James Burton slinging their guitars into the solo slots. The man can throw a party. The expanded version includes another Stones cut, “Dead Flowers,” with Mick Jagger, for a smooth country stroll into depravity. Gillian Welch brings sweet harmonies to “Please Release Me” and “I Really Don’t Want to Know.” Country, rock n’ roll, and everything in between, the Killer does it all. At 74.

REAL ROCK AND ROLL
Amazing that nobody is paying attention to this album. Jerry Lee Lewis is one of the all time greats, and he can still rock out better than most punks 1/3 his age. He's gathered an All Star supporting cast, and they run through some of the great rock, country, and roots music this country has ever produced. Hell, I've only heard five songs from this album so far, and they are ALL, pardon the expression, KILLER!
We are living in the age of Lady GaGa, and Brittney Spears, and computerized vocal and rhythm tracks that can make even the most untalented person on earth sound "current" or "hip." Please.
Take a good dose of this album once a day for a couple of weeks, and it will cure all your musical ills.
Jerry Lee Lewis is a living legend, and he ain't resting on his laurels here. The guy can still deliver the goods.
No reviews for this great album?
After hearing a friend's copy of this great effort earlier today (Sept. 7), I was very surprised to discover that not one single person had commented on a new release by one of the most important artists in the history of rock and roll, especially when said release has stellar guest performances by Kid Rock, Slash, Shelby Lynne, Eric Clapton, John Fogerty, Ron Wood, Gillian Welch, etc. Maybe others have just missed it because of poor promotion on the part of iTunes.
Mean Old Man
I don't know how it could be better! I have been a fan of Jerry Lee since he first arrived upon the music scene, so that makes me a 'mean old man' as well. He was great when I was young, and he is great now. He puts the present day rockers and C&W performers to shame. What a group that Sun had recording for them. I am an old mountain boy a life away but always remembered. His duets are among the best ever. Found it in today's WSJ.
