A hidden gem
Like many, I found out about the Gregory Brothers through their Auto-Tune the News series. When I listened to their "normal" music, I was shocked it hadn't received more exposure compared to the ATTN videos. These folks are budding masters of their craft, and this EP is a pleasure to listen to. In the few days since purchasing it, I've spent about three hours listening to its songs- not bad at all for a 20-minute-long EP, right? It's great stuff- catchy enough to draw you right in, but with enough complexity and richness that it keeps you coming back. I recommend these tracks in particular: Butter on My Roll: If you listen to only one Gregory Brothers song, you need to listen to this one. This track is pure soulful art: a genuine and touching piece that rocks with all the infectious joy of a Beatles track circa 64-66. It's an explosion of unironic love and joy, but the rich musicality, vocal virtuosity, and superb production values keep it from feeling campy or stilted The EP as a whole is excellent, but this track shines in a class of its own. West Coast Time: This is a very laid-back track- steady, smooth vocals cradled by a satisfying chord progression and harmonic structure. Also, I can't say I've ever listened to a song before that explores the dynamics of communicating across time zones, and there's something really cool about that- it's a quintessentially modern subject that pulls the genre forward, I think.
FYI: "Auto-Tune the News" is also sublime musically
Responding to the guy who dismisses the "Auto-Tune the News" pieces as silly and trivial. Not true. If you close your eyes and listen to the instrumentation of these pieces, quite often something sublime is going on, something exquisite and beautiful. There's not a trace of irony in what I'm saying right now. Really. So while this EP may be good too, the magic you speak of is in those songs too, regardless of their superficially ridiculous and lampooning nature. Don't be fooled by appearances.
fab album!
It's true - this isn't at all like "auto tune the news". But this album is a testament to the flexibility of these great young artists! The music and lyrics are thoughtful and an excellent blend of what seems to be both creative and familiar. I am happy to buy this album to support this emerging talent! Keep it coming, Gregory's!
