iTunes Review
Almost a year following the release of the much-blogged-about five-song EP Back from Earth, AWOLNATION (a.k.a. Aaron Bruno) delivered his first studio album Megalithic Symphony. Bruno’s 2010 EP revealed a refusal to stay put in one genre and this carries over into his full-length release. “Soul Wars” sets the tone with angst-ridden vocals that rip apart the song’s catchy melody. Bruno sings about his family’s dysfunction on the techno-tinged “People” before waxing a Robin Hood-inspired manifesto on “Jump On My Shoulders” which plays a little like Midnite Vultures-era Beck with its falsetto melodies sung over mechanical beats. Of the three tunes culled from his prior EP, “Burn It Down” exudes the most energy (especially with those Little Richard-inspired yelps) while the mellower “Sail” plays with more clever radio-pop innovations.

CAUTION!!!
This album is so fantastic that you should be warned ahead of time. You may not be able to listen to anything else for days, and you may feel very compelled to attempt dance moves that might provoke those around you to dial for help.
Despite this, do your ears, soul, and feet a favor. Buy this album. Listen. Enjoy.
ehhh....
I guess I'm the only one who didn't experience a life changing experience with this album, but I just don't think it's that great. Yes, it is different, but only if by different you mean it emulates several worn out styles and not just one. The music shows a surprising range and an undeniable talent, but there is nothing overtly new or altogether complex about it save two exceptions.
Sail is one of the best songs I've heard out this year. It is the one truly original and complex thing on the album. It alone is worth the 7.99 (but hey, it's .99). Knights of Shame is also worth owning, mostly because while an eclectic album full of emulations is not something I endorse, a staggering nearly 15 minute track that contains so many different styles without becoming old or seeming forced is worth recognition.
Besides these two tracks, however, I just don't see anything to write home about. This is written to sell alternative pop, and the fleeting glimpses of pure soulful sound are drowned out by the appeals to popularity. I'm not saying it isn't good, and if, like hundreds of others, you get enjoyment out of this album I bear you no judgement; but I think, given the obvious talent shown in this album, we can expect a lot better from AWOLNATION in the future.
Nothing like it!
I have been listening for about a year now. This album has been the best thing to happen in my life since the birth of my son that's how it makes me feel! Freaking brilliant. I hope the next album is even better. These guys are going to change music forever, just wait.
