Album Review

For the most part, Southern hard rockers Molly Hatchet have been little more than a touring band since the middle of the 1990s. They've issued a record or two here and there, but most of their releases have been live offerings of recent tours, or perhaps repackaged material. This is a collection of covers and a few redone versions of Molly Hatchet's own hits by a band that contains one original member — guitarist Dave Hlubek. The tunes include "Sharp Dressed Man" by ZZ Top, Thin Lizzy's anthem "The Boys Are Back in Town," the Rolling Stones covers "Tumbling Dice" and "Wild Horses," the Allman Brothers' "Dreams I'll Never See" and "Melissa" (the best thing here by far), the Eagles' "Desperado" and "Tequila Sunrise," Mountain's "Mississippi Queen," and George Thorogood's "Bad to the Bone." The Allmans' "Melissa" works primarily because Gregg Allman's voice isn't a stretch for Phil McCormack, and he's probably been practicing it in a mirror his entire life. The set gets topped off with new versions of "Whiskey Man," "Beatin' the Odds," and "Flirtin' with Disaster" — all live, of course.

Imposters!

What is this cr*p?!
Danny Joe Brown and Duane Roland are spinnin' in their graves! :-(
These imposters should be ashamed of themselves for ruining
what once was one of the finest Southern Rock bands ever.
Pull the plug fellas and let Danny Joe and Duane rest in peace!

Molly Hatchet is best covering Molly Hatchet...

I bought this album mainly on faith, thinking, "OK, I like all the original versions of the songs they recorded for this, let's hear them Molly Hatchet style!" It's OK, but on this CD it appears that the band was trying to record faithful reproductions in the style of the original artists, for the most part. For a cover band, they did a good job here. However, this is Molly Hatchet!--a band with its own considerable power, legacy and individual style of music. I don't want to hear them play watered down versions of the styles of the original artists, I want to hear them approach these songs in their own style! Some of these songs shouldn't have been considered, IMO. Desperado, for one. C'mon guys. You're not a ballad band. Sharp Dressed Man--OK, that's more in their ballpark. But instead of taking Billy Gibbons' licks to another level with more power chords and dual leads or whatever, they're just trying to sound like ZZ Top. And it's good, but hey, if I want to listen to a ZZ Top song played in the style of ZZ Top, I'd rather listen to ZZ Top doing it!

So overall, a disappointment. A cool idea, kind of like what Guns 'n' Roses did with the Spaghetti Incident, but on this CD I thought the Hatchet should have taken these songs and adapt them more to their own style.

For What It's Worth...

We know this isn't Danny Joe Brown. But the attempt to recreate the Hatchet sound is certainly there. This may be a glorified cover band at this point, but it is worth at least listening to. Plus you get the very good "Freebird" rendition when you order the album. This is better than some of the live albums that have showered the market recently. It's harmless and an interesting what if? album. What if Molly Hatchet performed these songs...this is what it might have sounded like...

Named after a legendary Southern prostitute who allegedly beheaded and mutilated her clients, Jacksonville's Molly Hatchet melded loud hard-rock boogie with guitar jam-oriented Southern rock. Formed in 1975, the group's lineup featured three guitarists — Dave Hlubek, Steve Holland, and Duane Roland — plus vocalist Danny Joe Brown, bassist Banner Thomas, and drummer Bruce Crump. The group recorded a self-titled debut album in 1978, which quickly went platinum; the follow-up, Flirtin' With...
