Album Review
For fans of alternative hard rock, Evans Blue will fit comfortably in personal CD towers already filled with bands like Breaking Benjamin and Taproot — well, assuming the album wasn't burned from a friend or downloaded off iTunes. Their slick debut, The Melody and the Energetic Nature of Volume, makes use of lead singer Matisyn's passionate vocals and slightly vague lyrics layered over intense and smooth rhythms. The album is nothing that hasn't already been heard numerous times before, but even if slightly generic, Evans Blue are at least competent. Their first radio single, the brooding "Cold (But I'm Still Here)," is the perfect lead track to hook their audience — and seeing as the album is a joint release between Pocket (co-owned by ex-Our Lady Peace's Mike Turner) and Hollywood, the song will no doubt be gracing many a modern rock play list soon enough. Along the same lines, with its powerful and soaring chorus, it's hard to deny the catchiness of "Beg," making the song prime to be their follow-up hit. The rest of the album is a lot more of the same, aside from the band throwing in a somewhat random, but enjoyable, rock cover of fellow Canadian Sarah McLachlan's hit "Possession." On the whole, though, the band seems to take itself rather seriously — check out the explanation of the wordy album title in the back of the booklet and try not saying, "Um, what?" Nevertheless, their debut is proficient enough that mainstream rock will surely welcome Evans Blue into their ranks with open arms; only time will tell, however, if they stay there.
Customer Reviews
A great new band with an amazing sound of their own.
This is a great record, kind of a mix between chevelle, breaking benjamin, and a perfect circle. If you are into those bands, you will love these guys. They could be around for a while.
They will be HUGE
After hearing Cold (But I'm still here) a long time ago on the radio, I overheard the DJ predict that Evans Blue will become one of the next biggest bands. Just buy the album and listen to it front to back one time, and you will be a believer.
average.... at it's best.
After hearing Evans Blue for the first time on the radio only a few weeks ago I was blown away by their single "Cold (But I'm Still Here)" and it is still my favorite song on the album. It's not a bad album by any means there's just nothing exciting going on. Just a normal, every day group of guys whining about ex-girlfriends. The singer has an interesting voice but it's definately nothing we all haven't heard before. He sounds like a bad imitation of Maynard James Keenan from Tool/A Perfect Circle. The guitars are simply noisy and straight up powerchords most of the time. The production values of an album of this style and hype should also be way better than what they are. If a band isn't going to write horribly interesting songs at least they could have an insane budget to produce the album to make their boring songs sound interesting. With that said there is still the occasional chorus that you can sing along and jam out to. All in all however it's an extremely mediocore effort and I expect we won't hear much from these guys after their one single blows over. Sorry but it's the truth. My honest opinion is to not buy the entire album but only purchase a few songs. Mainly "Beg", "Possession", "Cold", and "The Promise and the Threat." PS. I only gave it two stars because there isn't a 2 and a half which is what it really deserves.
