iTunes Review

There are few shades of grey in Flyleaf’s world — this Christian combo confronts sin and redemption in the starkest and most apocalyptic of terms. On their sophomore album Memento Mori, the Texas quintet clinches its hold on Gothic-tinged nü-metal while deepening its lyric thrust. This time, singer Lacey Mosley plays down her penchant for screaming, though her intensity remains undiminished. The band’s fervent faith is caught in bold colors, whether the song offers paeans to God (“Beautiful Bride”) or expresses an aching need for salvation (“Again,” “In the Dark”). As before, the sense of desperation embodied in Mosley’s voice is Flyleaf’s most distinctive feature — she’s particularly arresting when railing against evil and corruption, as in the scathing “Swept Away” and “The Kind.” Memento Mori’s sound is dark and astringent, with “Treasure” adding a dreamy touch and “Chasm” moving with a near-swagger. Guitarists Sameer Bhattacharya and Jared Hartmann achieve some elegant textures amidst the overall blistering sound of the album.

Darkness is Brightness...

After hearing Again and Beautiful Bride, I was questioning what would become of Flyleaf, especially after Bride's dark chords and Lacey's newly mature singing style. Now I heard the album, and it is GREAT! Best songs include Chasm, This Close, and Set Apart This Dream. If Flyeaf is coming to your town anytime soon, get tickets, because with this batch of hard rock, beautiful melodied, headbaning songs, it will be a concert never to forget!

Set Apart This Dream!

Wow, just had the first listen to all the tracks. Worth every penny! Flyleaf has turned up the emotion on this one. Beautifully recorded by a truely gifted band. Close your eyes and listen to "Circle" and listen to the words. If you're a Flyleaf fan from their previous music, you'll want to add this one to your collection. Thanks Flyleaf.

Now THIS is an album.

Alternative rock and nu metal blended seamlessly in Flyleaf's debut. Now, they've done it even better. Flyleaf's clearly learned a few tricks in the last few years. There are no real complaints, but I wish that Flyleaf would put a bit of a harder edge onto some of their songs. In the Dark, the standout, runs on the harsher edge of alternative metal and is a truly beautiful song.

The Belton, Texas-based heavy rock quintet Flyleaf formed in 2000 when frontwoman Lacey Mosley played a string of the dark, hard-edged songs she consistently wrote as a brooding teen for drummer James Culpepper.
