iTunes Review
There are few shades of grey in Flyleaf’s world — this Christian combo confronts sin and redemption in the starkest and most apocalyptic of terms. On their sophomore album Memento Mori, the Texas quintet clinches its hold on Gothic-tinged nü-metal while deepening its lyric thrust. This time, singer Lacey Mosley plays down her penchant for screaming, though her intensity remains undiminished. The band’s fervent faith is caught in bold colors, whether the song offers paeans to God (“Beautiful Bride”) or expresses an aching need for salvation (“Again,” “In the Dark”). As before, the sense of desperation embodied in Mosley’s voice is Flyleaf’s most distinctive feature — she’s particularly arresting when railing against evil and corruption, as in the scathing “Swept Away” and “The Kind.” Memento Mori’s sound is dark and astringent, with “Treasure” adding a dreamy touch and “Chasm” moving with a near-swagger. Guitarists Sameer Bhattacharya and Jared Hartmann achieve some elegant textures amidst the overall blistering sound of the album.

Beyond Impressed
Their first album was great, but this one has completely blown me away. It's even harder and more passionate. And it really rings with a sense of urgency.
Every song is unique and memorable in its own way. My personal favourites are Beautiful Bride, Chasm, Swept Away, Treasure and Arise. But really, they're all fantastic.
Beautiful Bride (5/5) - Perfect opener. A rocker celebrating the beauty of the Body of Christ - working together, as one.
Again (4.5/5) - Similar to songs from their last record, but still an improvement. Catchy and very thoughtful.
Chasm (5/5) - Loved this one the moment it started. It's harder and has a soaring chorus I never get sick of.
Missing (3.5/5) - Not the most memorable, but still catchy. Definitely works with the rest of the album.
This Close (4/5) - This one's 30 second clip doesn't do it justice. Lacey starts with deeper vocals than usual and then soars into a really unique chorus.
The Kind (4/5) - A little short, but awesome. It's about people who ignore reality, choosing to live inside fantasies. Great ending.
In The Dark (5/5) - Dramatic and fantastic. Has some of her best vocals.
Set Apart This Dream (3.5/5) - Not my favourite, but I think some people will love it. It's a bit of a break after some intensity.
Swept Away (5/5) - Incredible. I love the faint screaming and the way the verses are sung. Not to mention the beautiful chorus. It's about hypocrisy in the church. (Her vocals remind me of Kathleen Hanna in parts.)
Tiny Heart (5/5) - An older song made new and one of the best melodies here. It's as though the lyrics are coming from the perspective of Jesus (like in Again).
Melting (3.5/5) - Never been huge on interludes, but it works.
Treasure (5/5) - Beautiful and powerful. It captures just how valuable we are in the eyes of our creator.
Circle (4/5) - All about the Gospel. With yet another soaring chorus.
Arise (5/5) - I'm hopin' this will be a single. It left me breathless and therefore is the perfect song to end this album. "Arise and be all that you dreamed".
Bonus songs - They're not quite as impressive as the songs above, but if you really like Flyleaf's music, you'll probably like 'em. Uncle Bobby is really beautiful.
Flyleaf ~ Memento Mori
After four long years of waiting, Flyleaf has finally released a fantastic second album titled "Memento Mori".
Flyleaf, the hardcore Christian Rock band from Texas, has had us waiting for years after their first album self titled as "Flyleaf" was released in 2005. Within that album were the great tracks many are familiar with, such as "All Around Me" and "I'm So Sick". Those, and a few other tracks topped the charts for quite some time. From that moment on, people knew that Flyleaf wasn't any normal Rock band. With their haunting vocalist Lacey Mosley and their crazy instrumentalists, Flyleaf began to be extremely popular through out young teen Rock fans. They participated in many tours, such as 'Rock the River', and have spread their music across the country for quite some time.
Now, with this second album "Memento Mori", Flyleaf has become even better as a band. Their first single "Again" was a great runner up for the album. The track has very up-beat instrumentals with courageous and exceptional lyrics. Not to mention that Lacey sounds even more powerful and soulful, leaving the track with a great amount of emotion.
A few short weeks later, their second single "Beautiful Bride" was released. This track still provided the Flyleaf edge we all know and love, but with a more aggressive tone to it. That was the track that made me even more impatient for this album to be released.
Now, the album is finally here. As expected, it's fantastic. Unlike their first album "Flyleaf", this album shows a bit more religion, such as in track "Swept Away". Lyrics found in this track are quite insperational, and weren't found as easily in their first album. Fortunately, even though tracks like these may be displeasing to few, most of the tracks on this album are well worth the long wait. "Memento Mori" is sure to be a great success for Flyleaf.
This is one of the few original 'Punk-Rock' bands you will encounter in this generation. Many new bands these days aren't very satisfying and unique, but Flyleaf most definitely is. This album is sure to be a great addition to your music collection.
:)
Was the 4 year wait worth it?
HECK YES! All these songs are incredibly amazing. I've been a fan since 2005/2006 and have loved everything made by this band. And yet again, they have given me music that I can say I'm in love with. They saved me with their deep lyrics and beautiful music in the first album. This second album is like a renewal for me. These songs make me feel great and each song helps me deal with something messed up in my life. Flyleaf is made up of 5 wonderful messengers of God and I truly thank them for all they have done for me. If you're considering buying this album - do it! It's worth all the money in the world.
