Album Review

John Williams skillfully utilizes the formidable talents of renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and equally beloved violinist Itzhak Perlman to flesh out director Rob Marshall's celluloid rendering of the bestselling novel by Arthur Golden, Memoirs of a Geisha. Elegant and predictable, Williams sticks to the source, building grand Western themes off of traditional Japanese melodies with a heady mix of regional instrumentation (shakuhachi and koto) and cinematic know-how. This is the composer at his most refined and nuanced, providing a textbook example of professional composition that revels in its subject matter without ever intruding.

Pure Mastery

John Williams can draw music out of silence, and make music so beautiful that it is almost tangible. He weaves delicate melodies with unmatched skill to completely satisfy the film and the score. This album is truly amazing, and Yo-Yo Ma brings Williams' music to life in a most amazing display of musicianship and stunning quality. Itzhak Perlman is unrivaled in his craftsmanship. Beautiful album, wonderful film.

Memoirs Of A Geisha

I've got to say, this is one of my favorite composers. The music is well created and just simply beautiful. I would recomend this album to anybody.

Beautiful

I've fallen in love with this movie all over again, because of the story, the beautiful visuals and most of all, the haunting music. This is probably one of the better soundtracks to buy, because it's not just filled with 1:30 themes. These are full compositions and could easily stand on their own. Add in Yo-Yo Ma and Perlman, and you're getting your money's worth! Sayuri's Theme is absolutely enchanting.
