iTunes Review

Edwin McCain’s 11th studio album delivers more of what his fans have come to love him for without resorting to anything near predictability. “The Boy Who Cried Love” tastefully contrasts rootsy tones with innovative production (courtesy of Maia Sharp) as McCain croons heartfelt and reflective lyrics. The following title track gushes with over-the-top romantic balladry full of dramatic proclamations and subtly executed slide-guitar. Throughout Mercy Bound McCain’s vocals sound amazing – even more so for a guy who tours 300 days out of the year. It’s only on the weathered ballad “Sober” where he croons with a road-weary voice – but he can even self-harmonize those pitted, textured inflections to perfectly fit a song that reflects physical exhaustion. McCain imports some acoustic funk into “Strange Angel” before bonus track “Say Anything” turns Sharp from producer to performer with an awesome duet.

Customer Reviews

well... I am disappointed...

The album seems dark to me and not classic edwin at all... I think he needs to find his muse again...and it's not Maia Sharp! To the person that says this album brings them back to Misguided Roses... my friend you are misguided... This album doesn't even come close...Come on Edwin... find your heart and go back to the true messenger that you once were... Your music changes things...This cd is not your music...This cd only changes the channel. This is from a 15 year fan... Top tracks boom, the lucky one and... thats about it... Where are songs like Cleveland Park, Take Me, Sign on the Door, Sorry to a Friend, Ghosts of Jackson Square, Holy City, The Island song and the list could go on and on...Come back home edwin... oh yeah another song What matters is the heart?

Long Time Edwin Fan

It feels like it's been a little while for a classic Edwin Album. Mercy Bound is great! It brings me back to Misguided Roses. I love it! Looking forward to seeing him play these songs live!

Mercy Bound

Solid album all the way through. Well written songs....voice sounds as great as ever.
Anders Osborne cover "The Lucky One" typical Edwin makes it sound like his own and as good if not better than the original.

A rootsy singer/songwriter with ties to jazz and soul as well, Edwin McCain hails from Charleston, South Carolina, and it was with the support of native sons Hootie & the Blowfish that McCain signed with Atlantic Records. Let it not be said that McCain never earned his contract: his touring schedule is among the most rigorous in music — 300-plus nights per year — and his dynamic band (guitarist Larry Chaney, bassist Scott Bannevich, drummer Dave Harrison, and saxophone player Craig...
