iTunes Review
Hard to believe it was way back in 1994 when a young Mariah released her first holiday album Merry Christmas, which featured the mega-hit single "All I Want For Christmas Is You." Years later, she is one of the biggest R&B divas on the planet, with walls full of platinum plaques and occasional acting roles. On Merry Christmas II You, she sounds mellower and more relaxed than usual (in a good way), toning down the crazy multi-octive action and jettisoning the usual big-name guest appearances that sometimes weigh down her albums, (the only feature here comes from her mother on "O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus"). A nice mix of both high energy party tunes ("Oh Santa!"), gentle renditions of traditional favorites ("The First Noel/Born Is The King"), and pleasant surprises ("Charlie Brown Christmas"), this is a welcome addition to any yuletide soundtrack.

Nice album but I still miss her old stuff
First, I must say that I'm a huge Mariah fan. I gave the album 5 stars and I would recommend it. Having said that, though, I do long for Mariah's old style. Despite what her relationship with Tommy Mottola may have been like, the truth is that when he was guiding her back in the 90's that's when she had the best music. Music like on the Emotions or Daydream album. In fact, it was Tommy who encouraged her to do her first Christmas album. I miss her singing in her deeper chest voice and then hitting high notes, rather than all the whispery vocals she does now with lyrics that are sometimes difficult to hear and understand due to the loud, often over-produced music in the background.
There are some nice songs on the album, the best ones are the ones she wrote, such as One Child. The best thing about this album is that THERE ARE NO RAPPERS (except for the remix that came with pre-orders only, which may have rappers-I haven't listened to that one yet)! Yay! Thank God, right? BUT, you can tell she is still hanging out with her "urban" music crowd, which hurts her in my personal opinion. I hate hearing a Mariah song and hearing "yo yo yo-so so def, turn it up, yo yo yo". Unfortunately there's a tad of that in her "Here comes Santa Claus" track, along with a voice that sounds like Vincent Price out of Michael Jackson's Thriller (I thought this was a Christmas album, Mariah!).
One of my favorite tracks is the New Year Song, Auld Lang Syne. I like it because it starts off with Mariah singing clearly, without whispers, and without being overpowered by background music, background vocals, or rappers. When you can hear her voice like that, it still sounds awesome! The music then turns very festive and into a club-like sound, which is a nice change from all the R&B stuff she has been doing lately.
The duet with her mom is nice although you actually don't hear too much of her mother in the song. But still, they have two different styles of singing (her mother sings opera) and so this was a nice way to get them both into one song.
The live version of Oh Holy Night is nice but I think it seems a bit misplaced on the album. The sequencing could have been different, with maybe that being one of the last tracks on the album. I say that because many of the songs are relaxed, laid back songs but then when you get to the live version of Oh Holy Night there is a lot of "hoopla" in the background with people yelling and applauding in a church. It's good to hear they enjoyed it but it seems a bit misplaced on this album and besides, for real Mariah fans it's a song we already had anyway.
Oh Santa is a fun track, although I wish she would have left off the cheerleading/intro part to the song. It would have sounded much better without that. At the beginning of the song it sounds like it could be "up out my face part II", lol. But it quickly changes into a fun, festive song.
Overall, I would say it's a good album that you should enjoy. It's one you can play at a party or while making dinner and a lot of the songs will sound like classics even though she just wrote them. Her songwriting abilities are great. Again, though, I just long for her old style and for Mariah writing, producing, singing with no rappers and with nobody that has "ol'" or "big" in their names, lol! :-)
Fantasic!!
