Album Review

The art direction of August Burns Red's third album strongly suggests a vintage early-'70s metal album by some little-remembered band — probably British — working in the Black Sabbath tradition. First track "The Truth of a Liar" opens with a vintage-metal scream and Tony Iommi-style riff, maintaining the connection to the past, but from that moment onwards, Messengers stays largely connected to the present day. The vocals aren't quite the usual Cookie Monster cliché, but they're definitely in the contemporary death metal style, and the unison riffage and hyper tempos are equally of the moment. Still, elements of vintage '70s metal do thread through these 11 songs, rather like a less snarky version of the Eagles of Death Metal or any of the Kyuss-inspired stoner metal bands without the bongwater buzz. In a metal scene where few of the subgenres intermingle like this, Messengers is a welcome change.

Best of '07

This is by far the best metal cd of 2007 with the fiancee by the chariot in 2nd. It is much more brutal than Thrill Seeker and the new singer has so much more range then the last two singers (he gets so low halfway through Up Against the Ropes. Amazing!) The drums sound louder on this album for some reason but I love it. The major difference is that they are more metalcore now and have a darker feel to it. Here is a breakdown to all the songs:

1) Truth of a Liar-good catchy guitars and a very good solo (8)
2) Up Against the Ropes- one of my personal favorites highlighted by the low growl stated earlier and a sweet breakdown (10)
3) Back Burner- the best song, simply perfection and completely brutal (10)
4) The Blinding Light- sweet guitars that make me want to dance, somewhat long but still good (8)
5) Composure- when i first heard this i was amazed "YOU GOT YOUR WHOLE LIFE TO LEAD" (9)
6) Vital Signs-i like the church bell thing in the last half of the song; it adds a nice effect to an otherwise average song (7)
7) The Eleventh Hour- it's a pretty good song, but not great; it's still pretty brutal
8) The Balance- one of the best song guitarically in my opinion; somewhat reminds me of Destroy The Runner (check them out, they're good) (9)
9) Black Sheep- another one of my favorites love the intro (9)
10) An American Dream- i love the lyrics on this song and it has very catchy guitars and vocals (9)
11) Redemption- one of the greatest endings to a metal cd and I’m glad that they are not afraid to express their faith in Jesus Christ

Altogether it is a great follow up to the amazing Thrill Seeker. So go out and buy the actual disc and support them at one of the shows.

And on the eigth day God created Metal

Devastatingly amazing hardcore. For some reason christian metal is almost always far more talented than other metal. Must be God's blessing.

Best band ever, and still my favorite!

I really do not care what people might think about August Burns Red. This band is the best thing going, and it does not look like they will be slowing down anytime soon. ABR is truly one of the most talented bands to hit the scene in a while. There sound is so original and different from everything else out in the world today. There breakdowns and riffs are unbelievable to me, plus Matt Greiner is one of the sickest people to ever play drums. I really can't pick a favorite song off of this album, cause it's been out less the 24hrs and I've only listen too it 3 times. I really thought i was going to be disappointed with this album, cause i was and still am in love with there previous release "Thrill Seeker". I fell in love with Josh McManness (former lead singer) and the style he brought to the table. I'm still not sure this album will be better then "Thrill Seeker" in my mind, but Jake Luhrs (current lead singer) did not disappoint me at all. This CD will be in heavy rotation in my ipod for months and months to come. I strongly recommend this album to any hardcore fan out there. This will easily be one of the top albums of 2007. Congratulations to August Burns Red on a job well done on this album.
