Incredible

I first heard of Paoli Mejias when he played in two of Eddie Palmieri's albums. I thought it was Giovanni Hidalgo, which is considered to be one of the best percussionists in the world. Paoli is extremely talented and this album proves it. Cuidado Con la Percusion and Lo Que Dice el Tambor are awesome songs. Get the whole album if you are a latin jazz or percussion junkie.

Tombomania

This album, along with his "Transcend" and "Jazzombia" albums, both of which can be downloaded through iTunes, prove this musician is no flash in the pan. He is entirely self-taught and has been a respected sideman for Eddie Palmieri prior to this album. I would easily compare his abilities and approach to Eddie as well as to Ray Baretto (both rivals musically who kept challenging each other).
Paoli's style is very assertive and relaxed, clear and complex, innovative and traditional, fun and contemplative. In short, it's very balanced music that will only make you want more of it.

Born March 7, 1970 in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, percussionist Paoli Mejias' rise to Latin jazz fame is a story of sweat and dedication. Completely self taught, Mejias purchased his first set of congas at age twelve, inspired by records of conga great Carlos "Potato" Valdes and Latin jazz innovators Batacumbele and Irakere.
