Album Review
Although he had been a major tenor saxophonist in the studios for nearly 20 years and was quite popular for his work with the Brecker Brothers, this MCA/Impulse set was Michael Brecker's first as a leader. Playing in a quintet with guitarist Pat Metheny, keyboardist Kenny Kirkland, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Jack DeJohnette, Brecker performs three of his originals, two by producer Don Grolnick, and Mike Stern's "Choices." The music in general is straight-ahead but far from predictable; the tricky material really challenges the musicians and Michael Brecker is in consistently brilliant form, constantly stretching himself. Highly recommended.
Customer Reviews
Wonderful! Perhaps his best.
I'm surprised this hasn't received any reviews yet. While I haven't checked out all of his solo albums, I've listened to most. Plus I've checked out hundreds of his other recordings, and this is my favorite Michael Brecker album. The group is mindblowing. The compositions are interesting. The album as a whole is cohesive and it appears he really wanted to have his debut album have musical meaning (seeing how before releasing his first album he was on some 600 recordings with other people!) I wish he continued to follow this path/style on his subsiquent albums, but to each his own. RIP Michael.
Classic Michael
This is a fantasic debut album from Mr. Brecker. Michael and company sound so great on all these tracks, but check out My One and Only Love for a rare treat. The love he had for the music shines right on through.
Brilliant debut!
Mr. Breckert gives a premier glimpse of his genius as a front man in this classic recording. Comparing his technique with my own makes me want to throw my horns in the garbage and take up Dungeons and Dragons full time.
