Album Review

Michael Sarver finished in the Top Ten of American Idol's ninth season, and hopes to follow fellow Idol stars Carrie Underwood, Kellie Pickler, and Phil Stacey onto the country music charts. Sarver has a good voice, he wouldn't have lasted on Idol if he didn't, but like many Idol singers, he has a tendency to mistake volume for sincerity. On the positive side, Sarver wrote or co-wrote six of the album's 13 tracks, and they're among the album's strongest tunes here. "Watch Me" is a country rocker about a poor country boy overcoming adversary, and despite a lyric loaded with clichés, Sarver makes the song come alive. "Tell Me," a ballad about a son confronting a dad who left the family in poverty, gets a sincere reading that makes it truly moving. "Gonna Be a Good Night" is a bluesy country-rocker with hard, metallic guitar and plenty of energy, while "I'm in the Mood" is a sensual, albeit PG, love song. When Sarver slides up to falsetto on the chorus, he sounds really sexy. "Cinderella Girl" has a dark bluesy vibe, but it's a tribute to the passion between a husband and wife that the years can't extinguish. "You Are," the one tune he wrote on his own, is a solid, simmering song with a soulful vocal. The rest of the material sounds like Nashville product, a collection of clichés with serviceable but unexceptional melodies. The exceptions are "Always Surviving," a working-class rocker about a kid who triumphs over the schoolyard bullies to become a good father; "Ferris Wheel," the album's first single and a decent love song; and "The Way She Loves Me," another PG love song that Sarver manages to imbue with a believable passion. ~ j. poet, Rovi

Further proving he's not just 'another former Idol contestant'

I've been a devoted supporter of Michael since the earliest days of American Idol, so I would have bought this album just to be continue supporting a man who I think deserves to succeed, but this album far exceeded even MY expectations!

In my opinion, Sarver's strength is in passionate, fast-paced, confident songs like "Watch Me" and "Ferris Wheel" (a great summer tune and the albums first single!), "I'm In the Mood," but the album does contain a few excellent ballads - or slower songs - as well. "Tell Me" - a song which seems to autobiographical to not have been written by Michael himself - is particularly heart-wrenching in the best way. The album also contains a noticable, but not overpowering Christian undercurrent. For fellow Christians, this will be an excellent addition to an already good album, while also being accessible enough for even non-Christians to appreciate the song quality. The album-only final track "Angels Sing" is (in my mind) in contention for the best track on the album - certainly a possibility for CCM radio single, and one of the better Christian genre songs I've heard in recent memory.

With his debut album, Michael Sarver proves that he's not 'just another former Idol,' to be written off. His debut album is strong, grounded, and definitely one I'd recommend! If you think you don't like country music, give this a chance. A good set of songs from an honest place in the heart of a great, genuine guy doesn't need to be defined by a genre. Take a listen to the samples if you are still skeptical, and you'll hopefully hear what I mean.

He's incredible

Didn't Really like on the show. But i love him now.

One of the Strongest Idol Debuts

I'm not the biggest fan of country music - too me, it seems repetitive and gets boring after awhile - but this album is definitely changing my opinion. Each track on the album tells a story, and there's a mix of fun upbeat songs and slower, ballad-driven songs. Sarver's voice really shines on Safe, Tell Me and the bonus track Angels Sing. The faster-paced songs, such as Watch Me, Ferris Wheel and Cinderella Girl, definitely hold the potential to be crowd-pleasers at live shows.

As someone who's watched Idol religiously since the first season, I have to say this is one of the strongest debut CDs from any Idol contestant. Not only will country fans enjoy it, I think many types of people will enjoy it.
