iTunes Review
Snatches of Christmas carols make their way into these Amos-penned tunes of the moody winter season. Joy is in the ear of the beholder and Amos vacillates between open joy (“Harps of Gold”) and sublime winter mystery (“What Child, Nowell”) where she entwines traditional Christmas melodies with her own sophisticated soundscapes. This lush, orchestrated collection, centered with Amos at the piano, creates a warm, crackling fire with its deep twists of drama. “Snow Angel” beats forth with a weaving string section that resembles endless ocean waves. “Holly, Ivy and Rose” lingers between the foreboding stillness of the frozen air and the season’s festive joy. Midwinter Graces is not an album of seasonal cheer, but an album of seasonal mysticism that will appeal to Amos’ fans, who have been sent on many an adventure with recent studio albums. The gentle twinkle of “Jeanette, Isabella,” the nightclub swagger of “Pink and Glitter,” the solemn austerity of “Emmanuel” and the sneak peek into future hope with “Our New Year” are among the most straightforward and touching works Amos has constructed.
Customer Reviews
Unbearable
When I heard that Tori was trying Christmas I kept an open mind and thought of snow cheries from France which was one of the most pleasant surprises to come from Tori. With this album, Tori has completed a quadrilogy of four nearly unlistenable albums. It's time to work with a producer, shorten your albums a bit and figure out where the cornflake girl, marianne, and scarlet have been hiding and bring them out for some new adventures. I really miss the inspired Tori, this album is going through the motions to just make a buck. If you want to try holiday, go find loreena mckennitt.
Surprisingly Good- Skeptics and Ex-Fans Please Read!
When I first found out that Tori was doing a Christmas album, I cringed. But this lush and melancholy album is the perfect antitode to all the sterile pop Xmas tunes that you hear at the mall. Sure, "Harps Of Gold" is possibly the most dreadful thing Tori has ever recorded, but she more than makes up for it in the last few tracks. For fans that do not want to spend the money for a possible disappointment, do yourself a favor and at least buy "Winter's Carol," "Our New Year" and "Comfort and Joy." These tunes are breathtakingly gorgeous, and some of the best songs that Tori has ever done.
Light and Dark and Holiday Spirit
Great album! The mashups between classic carols are interesting and beautiful. (Holly, Ivy and Rose is a perfect example of how well she can marry these 2 different songs.) The orchestration is stunning. I love that we get a glimpse of her forthcoming musical with the song "Winter's Carol." There's so much going on in that piece! Harpsichord, cymbals, strings. The big band tune "Pink and Glitter" definitely hits that Frank Sinatra vibe. I think it's the perfect midwinter album. The music and imagery definitely warm me up.
