iTunes Review

The album title of the Avett Brothers’ fourth studio album was taken from the name of an English yacht that sank beneath the Cape of Good Hope, rendering its four surviving passengers stranded on a lifeboat for 19 days before a crazed hunger set in and they killed and devoured the cabin boy. Mignonette, then is (mostly) a concept album musing on this historical tragedy, with songs that echo timeless Americana tones culling from equal parts bluegrass, folk, country and traditional Appalachian mountain music. The majority of lyrics reflect the adventure, survival, sadness, desperation, and raw honesty of the story’s protagonists, starting with “Swept Away,” a beautiful ballad with high-lonesome harmonies and lyrics that sing of a reverie involving two of the ship’s passengers engaged in a dance-floor romance. “Nothing Short of Thankful” shifts gears to approximate a stripped-down, upbeat Western swing vibe playing under the pointless optimism of the story’s characters. The cannibalistic double entendres make “Salvation Song” as creepy as it is catchy: “If you take my heart/ Don’t leave the smallest part/ I’ve no need to live if you’re to come up gone/ And as my life turns to a song.”

the best

this is, even including the new albums, the best of the avett brothers. this was the cd that initially hooked me to the avetts, and will continue to stand as their best. every one of the songs is teeming with intensity and complexity, desiring to be played. if i could recomend one album of any artist to a friend, this would be it. mignonette is a solid representation of the avett brothers and their limitless potential. this album has no equal, now and forever.

Be Careful, you'll get hooked - Bluegrass with rock/punk roots

I drove almost 10,000 miles around the country this summer and listened to this album more than any other. Was lucky enough to catch a few Avett Brothers shows too along the way. I generally refer to their music as Punk Bluegrass but this leans a little more toward the bluegrass/rock/southern rock side of things. It's a bit all over the place and that's what makes it so unique, honest, and true. Those traits shouldn't be so hard to find in music today. If you like this one, or are looking for an another option, check out Four Thieves Gone. That's another winner. oh, and see The Avett Brothers live. that's what it's all about.

just GREAT!!!

I've seen them more than once and the Avett Brothers have always put on an awesome show. This album and all the others are all appreciable. I recommend all their songs and you will immediately fall in love with them.

Biography

Formed: 2000 in Concord, NC

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

The Avett Brothers' music has roots in traditional folk and bluegrass, but also captures the high spirits and no-boundaries attitude of rock & roll — which is appropriate, since rock is where Scott Avett and Seth Avett first cut their teeth as musicians. Although siblings Scott (vocals, banjo) and Seth (vocals, guitar) began making music together as children, their group's genesis began when they were members of Nemo, a rock band that gigged regularly in Greenville, NC.
