Album Review

The soundtrack for the five-part HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce, starring Kate Winslet, Evan Rachel Wood, and Guy Pearce, features a nice mix of popular song, big-band, opera, and classical music, all of which are woven throughout longtime Coen Brothers collaborator Carter Burwell's plaintive original score. Set in the 1930s, Burwell's lovely, emotive, piano-led opening title forms the foundation of his score, and his attention to detail and simplicity lends the film an appropriately sepia-toned hue. The remaining tracks are both subtle and stellar as well, with top-notch performances from Glen Grey & the Casa Loma Orchestra (“Milenberg Joys”), Hal Kemp & the Carolina Club Orchestra (“I’m Always Chasing Rainbows“), and Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks (“Easy to Love”).

Nice and Moody

Lots of nice woodwinds and string textures here. They give it a moody, introspective feel. If you like this score, you will most definitely like others like The Reader by Nico Muhly, Twilight (Burwell or Desplat), and my new personal favorite, Only Memories by Josh Kramer, all of which get lots of airtime on my iPod!

The Bell Song from "Lakme"

If like me, you just want The Bell Song from "Lakme", but don't want to deal with "album only" BS, go to Dllber's page and get it off her cd for 99 cents.

Only complaint...

It is beyond frustrating when a very, very rare track that can only be found on this particular soundtrack is "album only," such as Hal Kemp's "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows." This is a great soundtrack but I LOATHE being forced to buy other songs just for one. It isn't right when a song like Kemp's is rare to be found in any form, much less digital. Not cool Apple.
