Album Review

With the addition of former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, The The attempted their most ambitious album yet with Mind Bomb. Instead of the darkly polished dance-pop stylings of Infected, Mind Bomb opens up the music to reveal a slow, winding textured world of sound that celebrates its rough edges instead of hiding them. It's serious, dance-influenced rock of the highest order.

One of my favorite albums from the late eighties...favorites included Armageddon Days, Kingdom of Rain...duet with Sinead O'Connor and Gravitate to Me...Buy this album!!!

Ahead of its time

I am partially writing this review due to the 3 star review here, as this album by no means deserves no less than 4 stars. As an artist, this album had an incredible influence on me and probably a lot of other contempories as well. It was also well named as it was truely mind blowing on many levels. Production wise, it is flawless, especially given the vast array of the sounds that are used... this album is "rich' in both effects and mood building samples. The lyrics cover a vast variety of subjects that are mostly about a wordview that is hauntingly similar to presentday events. In no way are these songs too long, they are more reflective of present day electronic songs that use longer intros and outros to create and atmosphere and mood to set the core of the song against--much like Radiohead would use in later years. The upshot is that this ablum sounds just a "fresh" today as it did then. Yes this album was radically different from the previous in many ways, but it was a difference that gave The the more staying power and more than likely blazed a trail for later acts and music that fed mind as well as the heart.

Less Successful

Following from the genius of "Soul Mining" and the intensity of "Infected," Matt Johnson's The The take a turn for sinister in "Mind Bomb." In my view it is does not hold up as much as the previous two albums. Too many of the songs have a slow-build that do not reward repeated listening. Gravitate to Me is about 5 minutes too long, as is Good Morning Beautiful. The Beat(en) generation was a single, modestly successful. My favorite is "August & September," which harkens back to the glory days of The The. Not a bad record, but one unlikely to be on heavy rotation in your CD player. It gets a little dull, I find.

The The was the guise of Matt Johnson, a mercurial singer/songwriter whose music ran the gamut from dance-pop to country. Born August 15, 1961, in London, Johnson was raised in the flat above his father's pub, the Two Puddings, a haven for well-known celebrities and criminals; he also became exposed to music at the nightclubs and dancehalls owned by his uncle, where he saw performers like Howlin' Wolf, the Kinks, and Muddy Waters. Johnson formed his first band, Roadstar, when he was 11; at the age...
