iTunes Review

Portland, Oregon’s Hockey is an unlikely hybrid of ‘80s Brit-pop rhythms and swaggering, soulful American rock (the Strokes meet the Black Crowes, perhaps). Mind Chaos reveals a quartet with uncanny chemistry, resulting in fantastically palatable rock music with real soul, rousing people to dance with abandon en masse (especially in the U.K., where the band has already seen huge success). “Song Away” (produced by Talking Heads’ Jerry Harrison), “Work,” and the first single, “Too Fake,” move on swift, spare drums, handclaps and bongos, strutting guitar chords, and lithe synths. Ben Grubin’s voice is made for radio, one so keyed into the groove of the moment that the lyrics practically deliver themselves. After five or six years honing their chops, and moving from Southern California (the heart of the recording industry) to Portland, OR, fame arrived on their doorstep — every band’s dream. We think it’s well earned; commercially appealing rock with this much energy and soul doesn’t come around too often.

3am listen as spanish is studied

At around 1:30 AM this morning, I got on iTunes and saw that the free video clip of the week is by a band called Hockey. Hm... this made me wonder, what kind of band would name themselves Hockey. I was slightly eager to find out as I pressed the "free video" button.

I soon found out that they were a wonderfully catchy band with a quirky-cute lead singer and delightful music video. The appearance of Charlyne Yi was a pleasant suprise as well.

At around 2:30 AM, after listening to "Song Away" numerous time in the last hour while finishing up homework, I decided to search them on google. One link led to another, I found that their new album came out that morning, Oct. 5. By now, it is almost 3 AM and I have to get up in 3:30 hours for school. However, I couldn't resist and downloaded the album.

Song Away is still my favorite song, Work is interesting, so is 3am Spanish and learn to Lose. Hockey's lead singer has a powerful voice that is reminiscent of older times... Something about their music is very European... part underground London, part whimsical Paris, while melodies are similar to the 80s in the U.S. However, sometimes, a feeling of randomness is overpowering. A range of musical techniques are present but it doesn't do much for the album... there is a slight sense of doubt as to what direction the album should go in. Overall, a good band and good album.

Made my day

Years Active: '00s

Merging the studied cool of the new wave revivalist movement with the sleek textures and commanding rhythm of electronic pop, Hockey burst out of the Portland, OR music scene in 2009 to become cult favorites in the United Kingdom on the strength of a handful of live appearances and a self-produced demo EP. Vocalist and guitarist Ben Grubin and bassist Jeremy Reynolds formed Hockey in 2007 while they were both students at Southern California's Johnston Center for Integrative Studies, a free-form college...
