iTunes Review

Menomena’s fourth LP wasn’t named after earthly excavations used to extract natural resources. Mines was titled to reference the plural possessive word “mine” because of the Portland trio’s approach to songcraft. They use a computer program called Deeler that digitally loops a drum track before a microphone is passed around for each member to loop their own improvised riff. In this way, the songwriting process is democratic and each member can exert equal amounts of possessive control-freakishness. But within that method, their tearing down and rebuilding of a previous member’s parts birthed the brilliance of Mines. “Queen Black Acid” layers instruments that slowly snowball into a cacophonous flurry of pulsing bass, groaning guitar feedback and sleigh bells while “Taos” unleashes a more aggressively driving rhythm section with bursts of guitar squeal. Stunning standout track “Tithe” begins with the plucking of an African mbira before beats fall like hailstones and flickering piano notes intertwine with bass and guitar, sounding like it could all fall apart at any second. Bonus track “The Insulation” flies like a tattered flying carpet soaring through a storm of sounds.

PHENOmena

Okay, in all honesty I expected (and hoped) this album would be very good. It completely exceeded my expectations. This album is a fantastic piece of artwork. I did not think there was any way they could top Friend And Foe, but I think they may. As good as this album is on the first listen, it just keeps getting better and better. The transitions and hooks are so Menomena and the songwriting is as strong as it has ever been. Beautiful album. Thank you Menomena, this is one of 2010's absolute best!

Nothing short of amazing...

Until today I was on the fence when it came to Menomena. Their first album was incredible, but, not necessarily INCREDIBLE and Friend and Foe was just OK, in my opinion. Mines runs circles around the bands other albums with it's edgy beats, better vocals and easily singable melodies. Yet, the band is able to maintain a sound that is uniquely theirs and is sure to please their diehard fans.

This is one of those albums where, upon first listen, you are torn between repeating the song you just heard or listening to the next one because every track is so good and unique.

This album changes everything.

Wow.

I'm blown away by this record (been listening to it for a week on NPR). To follow up a record as good as Friend and Foe is not easy to do. Expectations were VERY high and Menomena did not disappoint.

Biography

Formed: Portland, OR

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Portland, OR-based experimental rock group Menomena is a trio that consists of multi-instrumentalists Justin Harris, Brent Knopf, and Danny Seim. They assembled much of their debut album, I Am the Fun Blame Monster!, by using a computer program dubbed Deeler and developed by Knopf. The album's unusual packaging was in the form of a flipbook depicting the bandmembers performing. Menomena released it themselves on a very limited basis in 2003, then signed to the Portland independent label FILMguerrero...
